I could definitely be wrong. Last I looked it looked like it was mounted on the transom behind the motor, I couldn't see a way to get it out.

While it may look that way, to fix your problem you may not have to remove anything. You may need to trace the hydraulic lines back there and see where the leak is. On mine it was just a matter of tightening the nuts that hold the lines into the actuator. Also look at the PS pump itself, its a simple GM pump, look under the pulley to see if the pump seal is leaking, look where the lines come out of the pump. Lastly look where the lines go into the PS cooler, another place it could be leaking. You need a mirror and a really bright LED flashlight.

Gotcha Lou, thanks. We did check the pump and the lines we could get to but we were on the water and it was pitch black and storming when we got back. I'll have a look next time I am at the boat.

The mechanic I spoke to advised that labor was the most expensive issue with that repair. They would not remove the engine - they would completely disconnect the unit, and then manuver it out. It is a tight fit, but it's do-able.
