Melt the dash? I could be very wrong but I thought that tint was "shaped" with heat on the outside of compound curved glass first. Then peel the backing to apply to the inside. I am not a tinter but have seen it done. I wouldn't let someone go at it inside with heat - with the steep rake of the windshild he probably would cook something - those guns get real hot. I would ask around.

I looked up the topic on YouTube and like everything else there is instructional video on how it can be done. Obviously, the curve in the clip is not as extreme as the wraparound on a boat windshield but I suspect that could be solved with wider film layed crooked (more waste). But then what do I know - its easy to say more than it is to do.

Got to go - just looked up Four Winns and found a couple of clips to keep me amused while I wait for mine . . .

I am also trying to tint the glass on my boat [2007 H200] my installer tried putting the tint on [20%] but was having problems with the glass up against the dash, as he has to use a heat gun and doesn't want to melt anything on the dash. Did your installer take the glass out when they tinted your glass? If so did he take the top of the windshield casing off and slide the glass out? By the way I know this is not functional but it looks very cooool and I would like to see a pic of your boat out in the sun, looks great!!!

Carl- No the glass wasn't taken out of the boat. The guy that tinted the widows used the heat gun on the outside of the glass. That is, he placed the film on the outside of the glass and hit it with the heat gun, trimmed it to the right size, then transfered the pre-shaped tint to the inside of the window. I will take the boat out of the garage this weekend and take some detailed photos for you. Keep in mind that 20% is pretty dark. If there are any imperfections it will stand out with darker tint.

Thanks for the help, but my installer was worried about heating the glass from the outside [misunderstanding about heating from the inside] and damaging the dash from the heat transfer as the dash is so close to the glass, but since your guy had no problems, i feel better about letting him go ahead with the install. I trust my installer as he has done a number of jobs for me and does outstanding work. And 20% tint is actually lighter than 15% tint, thats why i was curios how yours looked out in the sunlight. When you took your boat out did you have any problems with glare or it being to dark to see through? even though for the most part i look over the window anyway. Once again thanks for the help and this is a great board!!!

Carl-no problems seeing through the tint. In fact...it is kind of like looking through sunglasses. I usually sit up on the bolster seat and look over the window anyway. I will send updated pics of the boat in the sun this weekend. Are you going to do it soon? If so, make sure you post some pics!

The SS is acrylic, non SS is glass.
