So, I tried to install the horn today. As Mike stated, I had enough slack from the old wires. When everything is hooked up, I get a soft popping sound coming from the horn. I was doing some research, and there have been some complaints about the people receiving defective horns from Ongaro. So I grabbed a battery from the ship store and touched the terminals. The horn was went off and was plenty loud. Went back to boat and tried to rewire with the same result.
Question, this looks to be the same exactly horn that I had before. It looks like my old horn was wired with 16 gauge wire. We have all heard the problems with Four Winns not using a better gauge, but why would the old one work, and the new one not if they are the same horn. Would this be a wiring issue, or a type of gauge used? I did hold the horn switch down longer than normal one time, and it did pop my fuse.
As I mentioned in my April 5th post above, I'm now really wondering if our 328's existing horn wiring is on the light side for that replacement horn? Even though the horn you and I both purchased was to be our factory replacement horn, I wonder if the new horn requires a slightly increased amount of power and the factory wiring is on the limits of delivering the power required. Our boat is still on blocks, so I have not tried the new horn this year, but our boat should be floating in about a week and I'll see then how my almost one year old new horn works.
Are you going to try going with larger gauge wire, or look at a different new horn? I have not looked to see how difficult it would be to run larger gauge horn wires. Just when something should be a simply job.
