What ever bottom paint you pick, be sure you mask an inch border around your drives and stop the paint short. The copper in the paint will not like the drives.

Cougar,
Ping me
...my buddy has a 40" Bayliner and has this bottom paint thing all figured out. He knows what products to use and what methods are best. There is a place just under the I-5 bridge (next to Agua Verde on Boat St.) where they haul you out and you get a week to do your own bottom paint. My bud does his every two years...he has had it done and he has also done his own. He has tried to stretch to three years but things started growing...

I've had to crank the settings on these photos because the boat barn is pretty dark so colors are a little off. Here's a couple shots of a "revised" boot stripe. In these photos the apparent "bend" where the stripe crosses the chine is an optical illusion. From the side it is dead on level. I'm due on repainting the smile before it goes back in so it's a little dull from haul out. The other shot shows the gap needed between the outdrives and bottom paint. I still highly recommend barrier coat. It's cheap insurance.

By the way, that was the old owner's name. It's Beer-Garita now.

Well...

'All Night Long' is out of the water and in a tent right now. 25 hour service, so the outdrives get an oil change and the bottom paint is being applied.

It was a tough call, but I want with Interlux BottomKote with Ingarol. Gets good reviews in the Pacific Northwest and I have been told by many to expect 3-4 seasons out of it.

I'll shoot for 3 seasons.

Free haul out/pressure wash. They sanded it down and put on a couple coats. No barrier coat. From every drydock around here - they said it's 50/50 - but with today's hull technology - it wouldn't be an issue for 15-20 years.

I checked the progress today and it's looking great. Lines are straight and smooth. Couldn't ask for anything more.

Looks good, what are they going to use on the drives? I think there is a clear now available, which would be better than spraying those nice new Volvos with black Trilux. BTW, if you use trilux, you have to use their primer Primocron first.

Just leave the drives as they are. You won't have to re-paint them for 5 or 6 years in fresh water.

I noticed you have an extra anode on each outdrive. Was that recommended by someone or did you just put it on for added protection?

No extra anode that I could find on the drive. The GI motors have them in those locations (above the prop and on the backside of the drive)

No plans to paint the drives because I am in freshwater. Down the road when the outdrive finish becomes an issue, I will revisit that idea.

For now - they are fine.

The boat has been in the lake for over 60 days... had a great waterline. Can definitely see that the anodes are working (they'll be changed once a year).

Not a spec of corrosion or paint issues that I could find so far. I'll be keeping an eye on it though.
