I recently acquired a '06 Horizon 190 with the 4.3L Volvo engine. It is not fuel injection. After a couple weeks of driving the boat on the lake (approx 15 hours since purchase, total 180hrs) it began to squeak when turning the boat. It began squeaking only when turning to starboard, but now squeaks in both directions. The sound is loud enough to hear clearly over the blower and at idle speed, but cannot be heard when running on plane. The sound comes from the steering arm to stern of the engine but I think it is inside the transom. There is no squeaking coming from up around the steering wheel. I added some 2-4-C marine grease to the steering rod per the advice of a local shop, but it has made little difference.

Has anyone had this issue, or have any ideas about fixing it? I don't think it is a major cause for concern, but the sound is annoying and not natural for the engine / steering apparatus. Thanks

May or may not be the same since my previous FW was very different but I had this issue repaired under warranty. I don't remember what they called the part but it was a rubber bushing of some sort on the drive that cracked and was binding up. When out of the water it was very loud. It was a dealer service item in my case not just because of warranty but also the nature of removing the whole drive.

I had the same problem; it was the lower steering pivot; it had too many plastiic shims (according to the assembly instructions in the VP manual) and it was too tight. I replaced all the shims, with the correct number; a very cheap repair.

HI All,

I'm reviving this old thread b/c I'm having a similar issue. I have a squeak ONLY when I turn the wheel. Its not the pump. the sound is coming from the transom it seems. What moving part could be rubbing together back there? I'm not a mechanic, but there has to a steering arm or something. The sound literally sounds like pieces of (dry) rubber rubbing together. Are there any grease fittings on the steering arm that may be dry? Boat is in the water, and I'm not pulling the boat out unless it is going to break.

Thanks!!
