I use a Pela 6000 vacuum pump. A nice clean process, no drips. The same unit can be used for removing rainwater etc that the bilge pump cannot remove from the bilge. In terms of cost vs usefullness, it's the most useful thing I have ever purchased.

Thanks Graham. That's what I'm looking for is a good one and I'll spend a little more if I need to. Do you remember where you bought it and how much it was?

Howdy,

I used the one below, available from Overtons and West Marine.

I also added a hose to the pan drain to extract the oil without going thru the dipstick. That's a messy, slow way to do it.

Using a pan drain like the one indicated below, also available from West and Overtons, you can easily extract the oil in about 2 min hot or cold.

Cheers,

Rick

How does that pan drain work exactly? Is it left on engine permenently or?

I used one of those awful messy brass pumps from Walmart the first year. I'm glad I lost some bits off it. Then I got the Pela unit, which has a thin tube that will reach to the bottom of the sump (oil pan) ; OK, the oil needs to be hot or else it's slow, but the oil should be hot before it's removed anyhow so all the deposits that have settled to the bottom of the sump are mixed in. It's extremely mess free; just wipe the outside of the tube as you extract it from the dipstick tube and you're done.

I bought mine from "Compass24", a European supplier, so no help to you I guess!

The pan drain plug is removed and the hose is connected permanently. Then you can put the other end of the hose anywhere you want. Mercruiser uses one that can be pulled out the bilge drain so you can gravity-drain your oil too. I don't really like that idea because it requires you to "crawl" under your engine and reach in there to stuff it through the bilge drain. It just lays in the bilge. That's a messy operation all by itself.

I used an ADEL clamp and clamped it directly to my port riser. When I want to change the oil I just connect the Moeller vacuum pump to the hose and pump it about 15 times. Hot or cold the oil is out in a couple of minutes.

It came with a couple of different plastic tubes that you would presumably stuff down the dipstick tube but that's a pretty messy operation too. You usually end up flinging oil around and you have this tube that you have clean off. The way I'm doing it there's no mess at all. The only source of a drip might be the hose you use from the pump to the tube when you disconnect it after you're done. If you let it sit a few min before you remove it most or all the residual oil drains out of the hose enough so that any drip is easily caught with a rag. I just use simple brass fittings to connect it together.

It works REALLY well and since you are connected to the pan drain you get it all out.

The hose comes with a cap that goes over the end but I don't worry about it leaking because the capped end is up so high.

I've had the same question on my mind. The Moeller is what I am leaning towards too.

ht32bsx115 commented on the use of the Moeller through the dipstick any one else care to share their experiences with the Moeller particularly through the dipstick. I have a Volvo engine if that makes a difference.

Using a vacuum extractor with a tube that is pushed into the dipstick tube is not messy at all; when you remove it , the tube is of course virtually empty and any oil that is on the outside is easily wiped off with a paper tissue at the dipstick tube opening as the tube is removed.

Whilst I can imagine the more expensive semi-industrial vacuum pumps are better constructed than the Pela I have, it now on it's 7th year and has been used for maybe 20 oil changes so far ( cars + boat), plus removing residual water from the bilge/ drains on numerous occasions It's showing no sign of failing.

I bought a cheap blue fluid extrator from Harbor Freight for $25 or so last year. I just searched their site and I couldn't find it. For the money it can't be beat!

Cheapest one you can find, that extracts through the dipstick is all you will ever need. Unless you engage in regular bar room conversations that demand justification that your Moeller is bigger and better than a lesser model. 8)
