From what I hear my genset should be pumping out more water than it does. There is a whitish look to the exhaust which we have figured out is steam. New impeller, and the heat exchanger has been backflushed thoroughly. Three pieces of a broken impeller came out when I flushed it. A new impeller was installed before I purchased it, and I verified it is in NEW condition. What else can I flush out, and what else could it be?

Water coming out the exhaust is about 120 degrees.

How are you supplying it water when it's up on the trailer? Does the amount expelled look the same when it's in the water?

The Kohler 5E on our 348 expels a little more than that, but not a whole lot. I've felt it and it might be around 110 to 120F in temp. Not boiling hot but certainly more than just warm. When water is hot and turbulent it tends to look rather cloudy. Just look at what your house hot tap water looks like if you fill a glass from the sprayer. It'll look a bit cloudy until it cools and settles a bit. What you need to worry about is if there's an excess of white steam coming out, that's a sign of a head gasket or other cooling system failure.

Try asking Cap't Keith on Boat US about this issue. 4 plus pages on CSR and several posts here, don't seem to be answering your question. Cap't Keith is an authority on these troublesome generators. Give it a try.

You might want to check to see if the raw water intake stainer is not clogged with weeds.

I think that is pretty similar to what my genset puts out. The water coming out is also pretty warm. Do you think you have a problem?

Cincy Aquaholic says his is about double what mine puts out, if not a bit more. I can't recall what his gen puts out, but a guy with a 320 DA took a video of his for me, and its QUITE a bit more.

Gen is fixed.

I ended up taking off the entire seawater pump housing, and here is what I found on the intake side!



Who knew the bits and pieces of impeller could get stuck on the inlet side, and not just the output.

Here's the final video, a LOT more output, and the water is cool, not warm/hot to the touch.

Thanks for the post. I have to change my bad impeller out and if I can't reconstruct the broken impeller, I now know to look in the water pump housing for the missing pieces. How long did it take to get to the water pump and is it easily accessible like the impeller is? Thanks.

When you take off the four bolts to remove the cover off the impeller housing, just pull the housing and it'll come off. Disconnect the two water hoses prior to doing that go. On my 268 I have pretty good access, so it didn't take long at all.

I replaced mine this past weekend for the same reason (not a lot of water coming out). The impeller was shot and on the 318 it is a chore to get to. I had to take out the starboard side seating and still should have hired a contorsioest or a much smaller person to fix it!!!!!. I now keep 2 spares for the Generator and tools as well as one for the motors as well. Fun, fun fun
