Thanks 230 Mike. It seems as though you get my drift. Cost notwothstanding I beleive you can see performance gains through well planned engine mods. And I further agree with you that it would take something sgnificant in terms of horsepower to realize the improvement.

In my previous post I was trying (poorly) to point out how manufacturers provided different engine packages with increased horsepower outputs tp provide performance gains. For example, a 5.0 and 5.7 Mercruiser provide different hosepower ratings yet for all intents and purposes the exterior dimensions are the same. It would then, seem to reason that there is definetly a correlation to horsepower and performance, and more than likely several ways to get there.

Being a "motorhead" myself, and my street rod has been modded to over 500 HP, I get where you are going. But, people are trying to tell you that it's more than just a simple power-adder. You are correct that the dimensions of the block are similar or the same for 5.0 to 5.7. That means there is a change in bore and/or stroke. But, look at the power difference. You are gaining 30 to 40 HP, and the cost difference is up to $8k. That is a huge cost for a small gain. And when you look at top speed, the difference is minimal between these motors. The only real gain is in torque, but again, it's minimal for that cost.

My guess is that you bought the Lincoln Continental boat, and expect to add power so it runs like the Camaro. That isn't going to happen for a reasonable investment, either in money, time or lost reliability. As noted elsewhere, trade it for a speedboat, and you'll be much happier.

He could always drop one of these in. Just a few minor electrical and plumbing mods.

I already looked into it.... This set-up would not pass the Mo noise ordinance

Well, it'll quiet down a little after you put the cats on it. Plus, you won't have the expense of adding thru-hulls.

You guys kid about the turbine motor idea, but its not so far fetched. to get a small turbine that puts out approx 400 HP weights in (if I remember correctly) around 90 lbs and is 1/4 the physical size of the 5.0L V-8. The little turbine drinks 27 gallons per hour.

I do know of some performance boats that run a couple turbines to push a 45' just over 125 MPH. How would it be to have a toy like that!!!

Those hydroplane race boats use Lycoming L7C turbine (from Chinook helicopter) pumping out 3000 HP 8) 8)

Thaks for the input, opinions etc.. everyone. Sorry for the time between posts, but its been a long snowy winter in NY. I am very satisfied with the boats performance and in all honesty don't expect to do much in terms of performance upgrades. The thread was more an excercise in potentail, whcih I beleive can be acheived with common performance upgrades. The upgrades I would consider would alwaays focus first on relaibility, improvng fuel economy, and performace. I would like to take a good look at the ignitiion side of the engine, however the ignition is probably well engineered to start with. Once again, thanks to all.

Just went through all the posts and wanted to share.

On a car engine enhancements are only utilized completely when the engine, torque converter, and rear gear match up to get the best performance. A boat it is no different. You can add 200 hp to an engine, but if you keep the outdrive ratio and prop the same it will make very little difference. On different engine packages for the same boat, the outdrive gear ratios are different. On a 278, the 5.7 ltr has ~2.00:1 ratio for better holeshot, the 8.1 ltr with 75 extra hp has the power to get the holeshot and therefore only has a 1.76:1 ratio for better top end.
