Underwater LED's??

Does anyone have experience with underwater LED's? I've been looking at the Ocean LED line up (amphibians), but yesterday came upon the Lumitec Seablaze3 lineup which seems to be a better choice for price,quality of materials, and brightness. They both require a small hole in the transom so I would be having them proffesionally installed.Here is the desired effect minus the searay

Ben shoot me a PM about this. I am going to go with a real nice setup, that is very easy on the wallet and should work great. It's on a 340 Sundancer in Florida right now. About $70/light.

After reading this and the other thread, I decided to research, and ended up buying some lights just for this...

Doc99 and I were at a local dealer discussing service and looking at a very rough 2007 200SS. We saw some Live-well lights, and decided this would be a good, inexpensive option. Found a pair at Bass Pro for about $12 ea. We looked at my boat and decided on the bottom side of the swim platform would be most accessible from inside (for mounting), and should shine down as well as illuminate the water. Hopefully not too much reflection. It looks like I will need to drill about a 3/4" hole for mounting, but not too worrisome, since this will be at or above the water line. Look for it in season 3 of "Walt's Mod's".

There is about 1" of threaded plastic, so should be plenty to go through the hull. Looks like it will be more or less flush Not much more than about a quarter in diameter. I'll use a little silicone to install. For the price, it is definately worth a try.

I thought that'd be a nice tease! So over on the Sea Ray forum a boater designed these lights. They have 48 LEDs, and are fully sealed. Here is how they look on the back of a 340DA, two under the swim platform.

VERY low power consumtion, .093 amps for 2 of the lights. And after seeing that picture it's all you really need. From what I gather $90 for the lights, 36" of wire on each light.

They are sealed in a housing full of sealant, and they were tested on a few boats last season.

They can mount with 2 SS screws.

I'm about to pull the trigger. I know I am going to get two blue mounted under the swim platform facing down, unsure if I want to get two more to put on the stern in the water.

They are $50 each, and they have been tested. Turns out the designer had them on his car all last year next to his fog lights and they work well, BRIGHT too!

They also have a built in voltage regulator to prevent against voltage spikes while the batteries are charging from the alternator, battery charger, or if the generator is running.

Seem to be pretty stout.

My other issue is I've never added any lights or wiring to my boats before. I have two blank accessory switches on the helm, and have switches similar to these.

During a search I found they are Carling Contura switches. I found this link, which appears to be what I need…

to match the blower switch. An on/off red LED lighted switch.

I’m assuming I can just pop the panel blank off and the switch will fit right in, or will I need to buy a special tool as 230 Mike posted a listing in another thread,

They are quite a bit cheaper, and come with 2' of wire attached. A guy tried them on his trim tabs, but on his slipped boat corroded pretty badly. I'm sure they would work fine under the swim platform...

Guess I am just leary of thru the hull under the water line. Can you mount them above the waterline and maybe angle them down a bit?

You shouldn't need a special tool for the accessory switch. When I installed my lights last year, the plastic cover just popped out (a small ridge holds it in at the top and bottom). I purchased a matching Contura switch (just pop it in), and simply crimped some spade terminals onto the wire I ran to the lights. I had unused terminals up behind the dash which I found to be live with a voltage tester, and you should be able to find a negative terminal easily as well. Install after that was a breeze.

I bought the stuff to do the bow rail last year and didnt do it yet... somebody at the marina mentioned the light will attract bugs. For whatever reason, I hadnt thought about that aspect. You guys that have them... is it an issue? I would love to do it but I dont want to have flying pest all over.

For me, the cupholders don't attract bugs. I know the anchor light, docking lights, and stereo remote light do. This spring I am switching the stereo remote light to the ctsy light ckt instead of being on the nav's. The floorboard rope lights aren't on that often (ctsy), so I couldn't tell you. I hope the under-swim platform/underwater lighting will not be intense enough to be an attractant, but will be on the ctsy lights as well. If it does become a problem, but otherwise works as I intend, I will switch over to blue LED for the under-swim platform lights. That shouldn't be as intense, but still provide a decent lighting effect.
