It is a 96 5.0 Volvo Penta outdrive 220 HP with a SS prop, radio, depth finder, matching cover and matching trailer.

Looks clean about 8K.

What do you guys think?

I have seen some comments about the VDO, but anything else I should be sure to look at.

Thanks Mike. Nice thread. Does anyone know what type of 5.0 motor will be in the 96 190 when paired with the volvo outdrive?

Does it have a carb or EFI?

Also, any comments on whether they think this is a good year or not etc?

Is the price about right?

I haven't been shopping used boats, so I'm not much help on the price other than to say again that you're in the driver's seat in this market. As to condition, a boat can be beat to death by the age of 2 years, or it can still be like new in 20 years; it all just depends on how it was cared for, maintained, stored, etc.

My neighbor has a '98 190 with a 5.0 Ford; I imagine the one you're looking at has the same. I can't remember now if his is carbed or FI, but I'd think it's most likely a carb. And there's not a darned thing wrong with that as long as it's been maintained. Worst case, you get a great deal on the boat and have the carb rebuilt. He's the original owner of his, it's always been stored inside, he still treats it like a newborn baby and I'd swear it's a brand-new boat.

I'll say it again though - you're well into the age range where NO deal should be done without a thorough going-over and a compression test by a good boat mechanic. I'd also have him check the drive for any signs of water in the drive's gear lube, check the gimbal bearing & u-joints, exhaust manifolds, etc.

What kind of boating do you plan to do, and where?

Keep in mind that a 96 is now 14 years old...and if it was not stored properly there could be rot in the deck areas...I think these boats still had plywood deck coring and if it was covered with the glued on carpet that can rot if it was not stored dry and out of the elements....I had to do a stringer repair on my 88 and replaced most of the deck and trust me you do not want to do that job. Look for one with the full fiberglass liner...make sure you walk all round the deck and check for weak flexy areas...that's a sign of rot...if it was stored right it might be fine but here because storage is expensive many boats are left out with a tarp or leaky cover and they get wet inside all winter and then the rot takes over....

Well, I checked it out today and it is really clean. It has a little chip in the fiberglass at the rear base of the boat that I will have repaired. It is a 5.0 ford with a carb and it sounded good and looked sweet so naturally I bought it for 7K pending a satisfactory mechanical review from the local four winns dealer.

Totally psyched!!!

I tried to post the pic he sent and it is not happening.

I will post the pic's early next week and the results of the inspection.

We will be boating mostly in SE Wisconsin. Totally looking forward to getting her in the water. I am moving up from 15' tri hull with an 85 merc outboard.

We do some cruising, tubing, skiing and general swimming/floating.

I have a '96 190 Horizon. Bought it 5 years ago from a local dealer as a brokered boat. My carb 5.0 is solid, idles perfectly,plenty of power. Carb did take a little getting used to-just got to pump the control a few times for cold starts. Starts easily when warm. Great workmanship, nicer interior trim than the new 190's. Maintenance is everything. I did snap the transmission linkage and hammered the dock one year-scary. I guess that's common in mid 90's models. I'd check to see if that was ever replaced-hard telling when it'll fail. Other than that- a very solid boat.

Congratulations!

My 98 H200 had a that same setup and I had problems with the fuel pump but performance wise it was perfect. As suggested do some maintenance items so you know they were done properly and are current then enjoy the boat.

OK guys---advice time. I made an offer on a 1996 H190 and it was contingent upon a satisfactory inspection.

Here is what my boat inspection revealed:

They pulled the outdrive and found melted exhaust flappers, the gear lube was low due to a dipstick popping out because the threads are stripped. The lower unit needs to be re-sealed and the top cap on the drive as well.

Compression is 1 150,2 145, 3 145, 4 150, 5 150, 6 110, 7 140, 8 150.

Engine would not come up to temp - only hit 130-suspect stuck thermostat.

Paint on exhaust manifold metled, engine shield plastic is warped - evidence of overheat

Current owner did suck up weeds and said he noticed an overheat and shut down right away. Ended up replacing impeller he stated a couple of years back.

Needs a tune up, power trim gauge reads up all of the time, front clips for bimini broken and voltage gauge inoperable at times.

There is also a scratch in the fiberglass in teh rear part of the boat about 6-7 inches long down to the fiberglass. About a $500 repair they guess.

Dealer is going to come up with a cost to fix all of this for me tomorrow. My gut is worried about the overheat and the low compression on #6.

What do you guys think?

I think:

1. You're right to be concerned about those things.
2. His estimate to correct the things he can will be larger than you're expecting, and that won't include anything about cylinder 6.
3. If it overheated enough to melt the engine shroud, he didn't "shut it down right away." IMO he's got a damaged boat and he knows it.
4. The stripped-out dip stick indicates flat-out carelessness IMO, and I'd be wondering what else he was careless about.
5. You ought to run, not walk. There are too many good used boats on the market right now.

Sorry, but that's my take. I think you'll pat yourself on the back later by continuing your search now.
