I am fairly new to boating well to owning my own boat. My skegg on my lower unit is bent and I am curious what problems will this cause me if any. Thanks in advance and so for the stupid question

The only stupid question is the one that isn't asked.

It depends on how badly it's bent, but generally it won't effect you much. It's there mostly to protect your prop (which it might not be able to do very well now). Skegs can be repaired but it needs to be done by someone who knows what they're doing since it involves application of heat, which can ruin your drive if done improperly.

I bent mine and took a big chunk out of it several years ago. Had it properly repaired and it only cost a couple of hundred bucks - looks as good as new!

I bent mine several years back - not badly, but it's noticable. My FW dealer recommended leaving it alone - it can be hammered back into alignment if done carefully.

I haven't noticed anything as far as performance, handling, etc. Just visually.

I have bent several through the years. While I have straightened a few, I think I was most successful in the long term when I purchased a SKEGARD (sp) and put it over one I have broken off a large chunk from. Because it was stainless it looked good and seemed to protect well even when I might have bent it again. I would definitely do that again if the need arose. Fortunately here in Florida it is usually just sand I strike, and not something harder.

i think alotta people use skeg guards to basically fix a bent or broken skeg, ive never done it but have heard of it alot

I took a little chunk out of mine and even though it wasn't affecting anything, I couldn't stand the site of it. I purchased a stainless steel skeggard (approximately $100) and installed it in minutes. It not only works great, but it looks really sharp...especially with the stainless prop. It's pretty heavy duty and should last and protect your prop for some time. However, it slips over your existing skeg so you will have to straighten that first.

Shame VP and Mercuiser don't design their drives with bolt on replaceable skegs.

On my last boat (Bayliner) I snapped about 4 inches off the bottom of the skeg. Got a Skegguard and all was well. Got a 2009 H180 last year and even tho there was nothing wrong with the skeg, I put on another Skegguard anyway....... looks sweet with the stainless prop. BTW, Four Winns is quite superior to Bayliner, although the Bayliner treated me good as an entry level boat.
