I've been watching it the last couple of days, but all it's been showing (that I've seen anyway) is the oil plume coming out of the damaged well head. Tonight for the first time it's easy to see the work going on between a pair of ROV's a mile under the surface. Beyond the politics and finger pointing going on, it's pretty fascinating to watch this. Now that the top kill has failed, I understand the next approach will be to cut the damaged head off and try to install a valve, a risky job estimated to take 4-7 days. It should be interesting to watch.

Space is probably easier and more predictable to deal with than deep underwater. Calculating trajectories in a vacuum is a helluva lot easier than when dealing with surface wind and wave action, along with different currents down along the entire length of the cables to the ROVs. That and it takes literally hours to lower something down from the surface.

Not that this excuses BP, just that it ain't as easy as one might think.

I'm marveling at how much skill those ROV operators must have and how they can keep at something like that for hours at a time. I have full faith in a resolution to this - not because of the political powers that be, but because of the brain power and the abilities of a private company. Not that they'll be given any credit for it.

why try to stop the flow and plug it.
shove a big hose in the hole, a bit of gaffer tape, and hook it up to an empty tanker !

I take it then you would object to dropping a charge or two a couple of miles below the sea bed? It is afterall another 3 miles down to the oil.
