So, I am spending a week in Michigan for work, last couple evenings I have been driving around Lake St Clair, I am surprised that it is very rare to see a FW boat. I see many more FW at home.

I have noticed that there many boats around here, tons in fact. Weather has been poor for boating/swimming, warm but overcast. Tons of huge bugs/flies, I heard someone call them fish flies. Stopped in at a small boat ramp, every car/truck in the parking lot was totally covered in them. No way I would want to be out trying to enjoy a day on the water with all these pests.

Tonight, I drove up to Anchor Bay, and had dinner at Bobby Mac's bayside grill. Nice meal on the edge of the bay.

I wish I had more time to venture upto Cadillac to get a plant tour in, and see my future boat being built

Nice area and Jealous of all those that have boats in there back yards (shoreline or canal) that can just hop on there boat and go!! how would it be.

My sister-in-law and her family live in that area (not on the water) and they experience fish fly season every year about this time. They get all over the place and they stink too. I think it only lasts a few weeks and then the season is over.

For the past couple years we've spent a week in the northern lower this time of year...not this year, got tired of those things. They all have to die at sometime, and it seemed like the majority of them were on our boat. I would still find them when cleaning the boat after winter storage, the next year!!! Waiting until mid-July to go this year.

I think you should be good by July. I think June is Fish Fly season. Depending on where you are, I think people also call them June Bugs or May Flys (Put-and_Bay, OH). I totally agree that I would be looking to avoid boating during high fly season.

You visited the wrong side of the state. No "fly season" on the west coast of the state this time of year. I see more Four Winns boats here than any other brand. Even Sea Ray.

Even though I live so close I've never seen those fish flies, but I hear it is really nasty. I don't make it much to that side of town.

Lake St. Clair would be a 30 minute drive for us from home, but we choose to boat on the West Coast of Michigan instead. We prefer Lake Michigan for its sandy beaches and more laid back attitude. Plus the admirals office is on the Detroit river so she doesn't want to see work when we're out relaxing on the boat.

If you've driven along Jefferson Ave through the "Grosse Points" you've seen some of the richest shoreline in the Country. Lots of Old Money along there. Also the "Nautical Mile" on Jefferson between 9 and 10 1/2 mile roads is (and I quote their website) "the largest concentration of boats in the Midwest!"

Sunday I did drive from the Ren Cen up Jefferson to somewhere around mile 21 before heading to hotel back to the west.

Motown, whats that, must be before my time......

Sunday morning I did make it to "The Henry Ford", very cool place, a must return to see more! Was able to do the Rouge plant tour, I am in Manufacturing, so I found most of this very interesting.

Welcome to Michigan!!

You probably drove right by our house, we live in Harrison Township with a canal behind us (where we keep our 255 Sundowner) and Lake St. Clair in front.

I guess you just didnt see the right amount of Four Winns.. I have 1, and 2 of my boating friends have Vista's. Most of the other FW's are probably already at marinas though.

The fish flies are so bad this year... this doesnt happen 'every' year.. last year there were barely any. This year, the weather must've triggered some primative massive reproduction mode with them. They are harmless - they dont bite, and after living here my whole life they dont even phase us.

Having the boat in our backyard is a HUGE bonus. Going out after a long/difficult day at work and unwinding, is priceless. Not to mention if we forget something at homeport, its a lot easier getting to our house compared to our old marina. Not to mention we can gas up at our seawall with our 30g gas caddy (our 255 Sundowner holds 100g of gas).

Our home port is on the Canadian Side of Lake St.Clair out of Lighthouse Cove.

It takes us about one hour to boat over to Metro Beach and MacRay Harbour from our marina. I think it surprises people just how many boats are on the US side of Lake St.Clair. We enjoy taking our inflatable with us and touring all the various canals at Metro and at MacRays. Touring MacRay marina and Belle Maer marina itself is quite enjoyable.

We have boated in Lake St.Clair for about 15 years and still have not taken in all the marinas. We enjoy our annual stay at Bouvier Bridge marina.

Must be nice to have your boat on a canal behind your house. We have a 1 1/2 hour drive to get to our boat.

I bought my Four Winns from an owner who had it docked at St Clair. Its really nice up there! I was hapy with how clear the water was. I drove it down Lake St Clair, down the detroit river and across Lake Erie to Cleveland. the lake bugs or "may flies" as we call them here are an annual affair. They are the worst in Put In Bay and the surrounding ohio shore line. I have had the "experience" of being up there during that time and witnessed someone using a snow shovel to clear them from a sidewalk. the good thing is they usually only last a few days to a week, the bad news is they sometimes come back a second time in a summer
