to Mackinaw. Good day to sight see on land.


It would have been a great day to sight see on land if only we had been on it instead of fighting for every inch of the 58.2 miles we traveled today from Charlevoix to Mackinaw City! We left early this morning hoping to hit the 1-3ft portion of that forecast, but soon found out the 3-5ft waves didn't wait till tonight to build! Actually the waves were so big out there that there were times today I was praying for a 3-5 footer!

We have hit rough water everyday of this trip, but today was the first time I was actually scared :? Not only were the waves huge, but the angle they were coming from was W to SW and we were heading north so they were swinging us around out there. And to think we were talking about renting a car in Charlevoix and driving to Mackinaw, but no I just HAD to take the boat under the "Mighty Mack". I'm sure I'll laugh about this someday....just not today.

I have often entertained the idea of floating my boat on Lake Michigan. I live in Chicago, but keep my boat up in Wisconsin, and boat on much smaller glacial type lakes.

Back in the late 80's I'd have a blast in 5 - 7 Feet on a SeaDoo SP I'd drop in at Lawrence Ave. More than once I'd climb waves with too much curl and find my hull wrong side up with me underneath. Fun times.

These days cruising along Chicago's lakefront, perhaps dropping the hook inside the breakwater north of Navy Pier, traversing the locks and doing the river architectural tour appeal. So tell me how would an open bow H200 do? Obviously, one would have to pick days very carefully, but where to draw the line, 1-3 Feet?

I have always wanted to go under the bridge myself. So how was it? pictures if you have any. Glad you made it safely. I told the admiral, last week when we were out, to pull rank on me next time I try to go out when its to rough! :roll:

It was really amazing, and after traveling 434.9 miles to get here it's definitely a sense of accomplishment! I just wish we could of soaked it all in a little more, but after the rough ride we had just went through all I wanted to do was touch land :lol: We plan to take better pics on the way back!

We love cruising the Chicago lakeshore and have done it several times this summer, but the thing I have noticed about the Navy Pier area is it always seems to be rough and choppy. I would guess it's because of all the boat traffic including a bunch of large tour boats all within concrete break walls. I've seen alot of similar sized boats to yours there, but you would definitely have to pick your days carefully and watch out for the big wakes and changing weather. We almost got tossed of the bow of our boat while watching fireworks at Navy Pier by a police boat on plane coming right by us while we were anchored.

There was a small craft advisory out on Lake Michigan today...we went out about 1/4 mile...took a wave over the bow that added about 30 gallons of water into the boat and turned back :shock:

Bliss36, you and your wife sure are troopers. Conditions like that can be scary. On your way back down the lake, if
you want to stop and stay in Muskegon for a night, give me a call. Lots of activities downtown over Labor Day weekend.
A few new ones added since we last talked. Saturday night and Sunday night have the best variety.

Good luck on the return trip. Here's hoping for calmer conditions !

Looks like Long Island Sound on a day when the winds approach and exceed 15-20...I went out ONCE when there was a small craft advisory, that was enough to learn that a 20' bowrider is a calm water boat...no water over the bow but rough enough that it's not fun...When the weather turns like that I will put on the bow cover to keep water out in case but usually I don't go out on days when that's forcasted. The thing is the day can be calm with respect to wind but with numerous boat wakes it can be just as bad...

and to answer the question about what a 200 Horizon can take (mine is little longer than the new ones at 20'9" with a 21* deadrise) well anything more than 2' waves and you could take water over the bow. With a non self bailing boat that's bad...in salt water...real bad....

For this reason my next boat will be a walk around style boat self bailing with outboard power....

Thanks Cap'n!! We will be passing back through your area on the 4th on our way to Holland. If we hit some more conditions like we have been we just might pull off early and take you up on that offer! Looks like your having a great time! That must have been great to be under the bridge on your boat...I've been up there almost every year on land as long as I've been alive!

While your in Traverse City...the dealer there has a new '08 318 for you to look at :mrgreen:

Your fuel numbers look great! Maybe slipping on Lake Michigan won't cost us that much more in fuel...

Bliss36....I've got an empty trailer sitting here. Send me a message if you want me to start north with the rig and pick you up to travel back by land. I've made that route a number of times via land. Looks like the weather is just not cooperating with you for the return.

Flyer51 that is an increadibly gracious offer! We left Traverse City a day early today and headed around the pennisula to Leeland. From the tip of the pennisula to Leland was ROUGH! We fueled up and waited for conditions to improve which they did considerably! We decided to cut accross the lake in hopes being able to benefit from a better near shore forcast in Wisconsin. Right now we are in Sturgeon Bay, and are hoping to be able to head south Sat,Sun, or Mon. We did 160 miles today, and that includes over an hour going only 8.5mph around the penn. The trip home is 225miles, so worst case scenario we could do it all in one day.

We will do our best to make it home on our own, but that is a wonderful option to have! I will send you a Pm so we can exchange cell #'s. Thank you so much! :D

Bliss 36, Glad to here you are both okay. Making the crossing was a good idea. Conditions on this side
of the lake are not going to be good. It looks a little better on that side of the lake. If you hustle, you may
