My speedometer is broken, was broken when I bought the boat - I have the volvo 220hp motor - I will be trying to pull a wakeboard this weekend and was told to only go around 12-14mph - but what does that equate to in RPMs?

First off, 15-20 is a much better speed for wake-boarding.
As far as using a tach... if you are not on-plane, the tach will be of little use. best bet is to judge the wake and rider. Without a skier, try finding an RPM the boat will settle at (on-plane). Start at about 3000 rpm, and slow down a bit at a time, until the boat will just stay on plane (I'd say around 2500 rpm?). That should be about 15-17 MPH. After a few years of boarding, I have found it is much easier to board, and teach others at around 20 MPH; I usually set my PP at 21 MPH.

If you would like to replace the speedo face with a GPS on, try the Perfect Pass website (I think someone said about $400). I use the Stargazer Wake for skiing, but at $1200, it's a little pricy for most peep's.

Do you have a smartphone? If you do you can download a free GPS speedo for you phone... set it on your dash while driving and you're good to go.

Thanks for all the tips - will def use a GPS app on my Droid for this weekend to give me an idea. I may end up putting in the PrecisionStar for my speedo replacement.

Even a Hand-held GPS like the eTrex or similar would be a fairly inexpensive option, with maps to boot!

I tried 14-18 MPH for a while... very tiring. Your arms just give out after a while. I found 20-24 MPH (really smooth water) to be much less fatiguing, and much more fun to try tricks!

Jealous, something I've wanted to try.

My stock speedo is useless below 20mph, I strictly use GPS when trying to maintain a speed for watersports. I also agree that 12=14 is too slow, I tow my 8 year old at about 15/16 on his wakeboard.
