Hey Mike! I think you got the right idea! That's probably why your boat looks so incredibly good!!

When a slip is rented... a lift isn't always available or even an option.

As for bottom paint... most newer boats are more than capable of sitting in lakes for months at a time without damage. All that needs to happen is the proper care as often as possible. Bottom paint is a must have for those larger boats who sit in brackish/salt water for extended periods.... smaller boats and fresh water could really go either way. At least in Seattle, bottom paint on a smaller boat actually reduces the resale of your boat more than a scum line or two on the hull - purely because the buyer then assumes you've left it in the water for long periods of time.

I've seen 15 year old boats that have lived in the lake 8 months out of the year without a haulout until season ending... look like new when hull-cleaned at the end of each yearsure, it costs a bit more to have the hull cleaned - but there's tons of cleaners and options. And the hulls look like any other trailer boat once done. They can look like new....

I've seen trailered boats that have hulls that get chipped and scratched worse than moored boats because of the damage that can happen when trailering via highways. Those boats... then when slipped for some period - are actually more susceptable to gel coat damage because the rock chip/scratch actually opened up the gel coat to the fiberglass.

It's really about how much attention you give the boat along the way. There is no right/wrong answer to the question.

Me personally... I'll take a bit more elbow grease once or twice a month or two so that I can drive up to the dock and go - rather than load up at home, haul to the ramp, fight with the chaos at the ramp, launch, park the car, run back to the boat, boat all day... and then repeat in the opposite order. And best of all - the wife doesn't complain.

Slip your boat all month long.... or 2 months... or 3... but take care of your hull when you do pull it out. The damage begins the first time you decide that are either too tired or too cheap to take care of your boat appropriately.

Bottom paint would be bad for resale on a small boat here as well (probably everywhere), but you can't tell the whole story by how it looks. Fiberglass does absorb water, and it doesn't take long to do it. The vinylester barrier used by FW will help and slow down the process but it will not stop it. A hull full of water will still look great. I was just sayin' what I would do.

Thanks for all the insight.

We are thinking of getting a boat lift at a later point, but have to get a permit for it and that can take a few months or longer. Especially since the location we are going to be leaving the boat has 100 slips, all being completed at the same time. So there will me a mass swarm applying for a permit. I just don’t want to waste good boating weather, but still be able to leave the boat in the water.

Has any one looking at, into the JetDock? A floating boat lift that you drive your boat onto? Went to the boat show last weekend and they had a large demo of their stuff. Kind of worried about driving my boat onto plastic, but who knows. Same price as a boat lift, around 12,000.

Thanks again everyone for your help and information.
Keep it coming. :D

I'd say, if a lift is "on the way" at some later point, just enjoy the boat and pull it as often as you can to scrub it down, etc.

We used to have a boat in the water all season in Western MD because the lake had only floaters, and were seasonally removed. No permanent docks were allowed. As some have replied, we took it out two or three times seasonally to clean it. I used Slimey Grimey in a bucket of warm water to clean the hull, and the results were always remarkable. We now have a lift (on Smith Mountain Lake) and I highly recommend them, it was well worth it.

Our boat with no bottom paint has been slipped for the last two summers. I paid to have it cleaned at the end of the season. The bottom still looks great for a 13 year old boat. The previous owner kept it slipped for most of its life as well. We're thinking of moving up to a cruiser so I didn't want to potentially reduce the re-sale value by bottom painting.

Different boats may have different results but so far we've been lucky. I'd like a lift but that's not in the budget right now.

Cap'n Morgan, we weren't spamming they were asking about boat lifts so we gave them an idea where to get them just like everyone on page 1.

The original post is over 3 years old. Where were you 3 years ago? I see what you are trying to do here, but your methods are all wrong.
