Okay, I've been staring at these two buttons on my engine controls for years. I haven't a clue what they do. The button on my port shifter just fell apart and now I'm searching for a replacement. Here is an image of my shifters

Notice the two buttons? What do they do? Are they momentary on/off? Or are they momentary off/on? On the back of the switch it reads "Jud Co 1024 2". A bit of googling finds this:

First, I need to know what the heck it is before I find a suitable replacement. I know the answer should be obvious, but please enlighten me here. What do these switches do?

They are what we call Dead mans, you put a flexiable cable around your wrist or to your life jactet and then a clip goes in the grooved slot to slightly lift the spring loaded plunger and so dis the earth connection. If you get thrown out of the boat the clips is pilled out and the engines stop. Usually used on Outboat engine boats but also on I/O on small boats up to about 30ft. The problem espacailly with single engine outboard boats is, if you let go of the steering ie thrown out the rotational torque of the engine will turn the engine to one side normally the right and continue to turn in on a decreasing circle, normally to where you where thrown out and then ouch and your fish food!!!!!!

Don't they disengage the gears and keep them in neutral so you can rev the engines? My disengage buttons are square and on top of my shifters.

OK I'm familiar with those. My dad's boat with outboards has them. The ones on my shifter don't look anything like them. There is nowhere to clip anything into or under. And googling their part number shows they are just simply "buttons".

No, my shift disengage buttons are on the sides of the shift levers where they hinge. Good thought though and great looking helm pic!

Have you tried to trace the wires?
They could be jumpers for the neutral safety switch but that doesn't make much sense.
They could be connected to nothing and only be used on some other brands or drivetrains?

Maybe they're buttons to allow the outdrives to be raised above the "trim" range, into the "trailer" position ? Some VPs had that facility, the trim button pressed on it's own would only take the outdrives up so much, then both had to be pressed. (the electronic trim control unit/ trim senders on the outdrives with 3 wires, not the more common 2). Mercruisers have "trim" and "trailer" set ups also.

Thanks for the ideas guys.

I need to double check, but when I tried to start my port engine with the broken switch removed the starter cranked, but the engine didn't start. Manually completing the circuit allowed the engine to start right up. I highly doubt this was coincidental. The wires trace to the wire harness for the trim controls and shift engage bypass stuff.

Maybe the just added a few "extra buttons" to make the helm "look cool"? LOL

I think Graham has the right idea. When the trim sender failed on my brothers Cruisers 2870 last season the only way he could trim the drives up was to hold this button in while using the trim button. I think it might be some kind of a bypass for the trim limiter?

Did you ever figure out what they are used for?

According to the Volvo Operator's Manaul, these are called "Catch Buttons". These buttons, according to VP, disconnect a "catch", so that the drives can be trimmed into the BEACH and LIFT positions. (Page 34 in the Operator's Manual)
