Greetings all
I bought my 2001 horizon a year ago and now have to replace the original starter. What is the average price for the starter and installation?
The boat is parked at a lake so it would have to be done on location. West Marine has the starter at $189.00
Also I cant find the part number for the starter either? Are there "generic" starters I can use?

I've bought a couple for my old 88 4.3, paid in the range of 160-170 at a local marine shop that sells aftermarket stuff (Sierra, MES). Installed it in about 1/2 hr. Just make sure you disconnect the batt neg cable first before disconnecting the pos cable at the solenoid. The bolts are way under the rear of the engine, 9/16ths if I recall. I used a big 1/2 drive ratchet wrench to get em off. A tip to make it easier, is tie a line round the starter, and have a helper hold it up for you, so you don't have to hold the starter up with one hand and get the bolts out. They are heavy when you are reaching that far back....
IF there is a front mount bracket, make sure you use it, that helps steady it so the mounting bolts don't get stressed and break (that would ruin your day).
As far as part #s, look at the on line Sierra catalog and you can get the # there based on the engine you have. Or, look up your engine at http://www.dougrussell.com, get the original part #, then cross reference that on the Sierra site...Arco and MES also sell new Marine starters....

Glad to help, if you have good access (mine is about as easy as an I/O gets) it's not a bad job. I remove the rear seats, slide the bulkhead foward, turn off the batt switch, disconnect the wiring after making sure I know where the smaller connections go and I can have it out in 15 min. I like to take a good digital pic of any wiring that I disconnect. Some come with shims installed, mine did not have any so I did not use them when I put the new starter in. One thing I can say, if your exhaust manifold drain on that side leaks a bit, it can leak right on to the connections on the starter solenoid. That's what trashed my first replacement starter solenoid. I got a new starter because I wanted to use the old one as a spare, then put a new solenoid on that one. So if I have a problem during the season, I can swap in the spare in a half hr and be running again quick....

I just got back on the forum for the season and noticed this post. Not sure if you have completed this project yet, but I replaced the starter in my 2001 180 Horizon last season. I did the work myself and aside from having to do a hand stand in the engine compartment to get to it, it was a pretty easy job. It is only two bolts, but they are tough to get to and it is hard to hold the starter in place. I like LouC's recommendation to have someone hold it up with a rope. I didn't do that and it was really difficult to hold in place by myself.

It worked like a champ all season.

I got a new one last year, and did not have time to order one, so ended up buying a OEM Merc one. If you have a Volvo, the Mercruiser starters will also work if you get the right part number. In my area it is much easier to find Merc parts than volvo parts. I think I paid around $160.
