Yeah but they purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr... :)

I like the filter kit like mine better, but I like the raw water pump retainer on the newer ones more.

You guys have those weird-looking orange engines.

Agreed... Orange Engines, Grey drives.... Make up your F-in mind already!

As far as fuel filters, Merc couldn't have done it much worse. Every time I have to do the Impeller or fuel filter, I am tempted to cut a hole in the bottom of the boat for easier access!

Thank you all for the input. My Seloc manual came yesterday and pointed out that some "newer" engines came with a replaceable element style filter. My engine is exactly like Tanker's... except for some reason the oil filter and power steering resevoir are flipped! Man do I feel dumb... I even inspected that "unknown filter looking thing" a bunch of different times and had determined that while I didn't know what it was, it definitely wasn't my oil filter  Weird thing is, all of the documentation I had, including the engine plate, pointed me in the direction of a model # for a spin on filter.

Tanker- You wouldn't happen to know the part number for the replacement element and/or a reputable dealer to buy from, would you?

Rob: I picked up the boat the first Saturday in April... the next day it was almost 80, and the ice was off of pewaukee, and my boat was never winterized... so out I went! We were able to sneak out again last Friday for a bit, hopefully it won't be too long before we can go on a much more regular basis :D

As always, thanks much for everyone's help... these forums truly are priceless.

Badger,

8692305 is the number that I just took off the top of my filter cartridge. A crescent wrench takes the top of the canister off and the number is on the top of the filter. I would take yours off and check the number first to make sure it is the same one.

http://www.ipdusa.com/version.asp?strPa ... &V_ID=7454 $6.60

Seeing the online proces, I way overpaid for mine from the local Volvo Penta dealer............. Pays to shop around!!

Damn...i see the 22+ sizes have all kinds of engine access room. Had I entertained that thought before limiting the size boat I would have made serious considerations to upping the size of my purchase. To make things even - all you with 22+ size boats should duct tape your right hand to your left foot before performing any engine maintenance!!!

So yall probably don't have to use a net, jock strap and magnet to pull the water drain plugs huh? Hell, you guys can even see your batteries. I know i have one, cuz i saw it once when i fell down while reaching for a beer.

I need to swap my impellor before heading out - i have the VP with the water impellor like Toad has his boat (see his pic in prior post)....how tough is this to do - the salesman said it was easy, but he has a mechanic do his for him (translation - he has no clue).

TX- Just did the impeller replacement on the exact same engine in my '08 200SS. I definitely would not consider myself mechanically inclined, but I did not think it was too difficult. Probably took me about 2 hours... but at least 30 minutes were spent trying to use a stubby screwdriver to remove the four mounting bolts... before I realized that these screws were actually small bolts easily removed w/ a crescent wrench  At least on my '08 there is an engine "hatch" behind the back cushion of the bench that is removed w/ two small bolts, I would definitely recommend removing this as it makes the job MUCH easier. I also found that it was more comfortable to lay on the sunpad w/ my head in the engine compartment through the "hatch" than it was to sit on the rear bench, not sure if that will be the same for you. In general...

1) Remove engine accessibility "hatch"
2) Remove supply and return water hoses from impeller pump
3) Remove two mounting bolts from bracket
4) make a mark of some sort between the front of the impeller housing and the rear... this will help a lot to make reinstalling the impeller a simpler process as the four bolts are not spaced evenly
5) Remove the four bolts from the impeller housing, one is in between the supply and return hoses...
6) Remove the impeller housing
7) Remove old impeller from housing w/ needle nose pliers.
8 ) Make sure all old remnants of impeller and O-ring are cleaned out
9) Reinstall new impeller into housing, I found that coating the impeller w/ the supplied glycerin prior to putting it back together made things much easier
10) Put new O-ring into housing body
11) Put impeller housing back together using four bolts
12) Reattach bracket and hoses (make sure to put the right ones in the right places!)
13) Say a small prayer that you did it correctly
14) Fire her up and watch for leaks

Hope this helps... anyone else that has done this before have any other helpful tidbits?

Matt

No insult intended in this post, but if you really are a "newbie", I have seen worse mistakes... I had a 210SS with the 5.7 and the same prop as you have, and I could reach 58 GPS...BUT....speeds were in the upper 40's before trimming up to the "sweet spot"...,so I ask the question are you trimming the drive up as your speed increases on plane?
