I have a 99 Volvo DP. I am just wondering if there is a secret to holding the props still while loosening the nut that holds them on.

Yep. Put it in gear. :D

Removal: Put in fwd gear to loosen rear prop; rev gear to loosen front prop; remove both nuts CCW.
Installation: Put in fwd gear to tighten front prop; rev gear to tighten rear prop.

Front Nut: 45 Ft-Lbs., use Volvo tool
Rear Nut: 50 Ft-Lbs., use 30mm socket or Volvo tool

Make sure you have the tool. MUCH easier than trying to get something around it.

Being somewhat lazy and not wanting to climb into and out of the boat for this. I just use a 2X6 about two feel long and place between the prop and the drive leg on whichever side it is needed on. I have done it 5-6 times -- no issues, as long as you can hold and turn at the same time --- so you just need reasonable mechanical dexterity ---

I must admit I do pretty much the same as Dale, except I use wedge shaped piece of wood.
