I took the pressure side hose off the raw water pump (the long skinnier one) and hooked that to the front port of the exhaust manifold. A garden hose fits perfectly in there and just use the clamps to tighten it all. I then just used my fingers to plug the holes that are open and my neighbor would hold the hose and release it... getting a big surge of water. After a few times of that all this black shat came out the exhaust. Problem solved.

Sounds like a good plan, I have a 7.4, but I am sure I can figure out how to get this done. I am thinking I sucked something up since I ran fine one day, and literally the next day it was overheating, even idling.

Good deal on the flush...also consider pulling the drains on the engine and manifolds if not already done and let them flush as well. What came out the bottom may still be lurking up top and you want to get it all out.

Also, get that thermostat installed....it's cheap and very much needed. Running without one is not good for the engine at all. #1 - the incoming cool water needs to sit in the engine long enough to absorb the heat - i know it seems odd, but will help cool her down - plus maintain a consistent operating temp. You do need some heat in there also.

I pulled a huge handful of weeds from the lower unit intake grill. YOu would be able to look from side to side (thru lower unit assuming VP drive).......for the money - that impellor was bad and good job getting it out of there before the fins broke off. They already were giving up the ghost and bending backward...kinda like using linguini for a fan.
