I will look at doing that first. My manual is in the boat, the dealer claims it's 1/4" chain and my buddy finds that small. Can anyone confirm the 348 with a Maxwell 500 uses 1/4" chain. I have a friend down south and he will get me 100 ft of 1/4 chain from west marine on the way home.
I would hate to buy the wrong size.
Thanks again to all.[quote="Paul I."][quote="terryd"]Thanks for reply.

Terry

The only chain that this will accept is 1/4" G4 chain. The G4 is just the grade

Hey WarEagle17, Please post pictures when you get this installed. Do you have Flexiteek now? As I understand, the factory roughs up the swim platform to glue the flexiteek down so I will need to do some work to the deck before I could install the seadek.

As long as the surface is relatively flat, even with some adhesive remaining from the flexiteek removal, you won't have to do much at all to the deck. Providing you cover it with some other decking material.

I would also recommend you check out PlasDeck - Cool teak. It's less pricey than SeaDek, entirely made in the USA and just as nice.

I have Seadek on my boat. It can get dirty quickly, but it does clean up with a little work. I think it should, for the money clean up better! Go with light colors because of the heat. I do love it for it non-slip. Once it is down, make sure it is were you want it! It is hard to pick back up & move. BUT it is NOT a permanent install, like the Flexiteek.

At $20 per sq. ft. DIY, I think I'll leave the swim platform non-skid and replace the carpet in the cockpit for $500 (snapincarpet.com). I think we're going with "Surf N Sand".

It does look nice. I'd just rather spend 2k on something else. Like a windlass ... installed. Perhaps if I lived on the boat it would be worth it.

I was just suggesting an alternative to the often over-hyped Seadek. I'm with you. No way will I ever spend that kind of $'s for a cosmetic improvement. Magic Erasers are much cheaper to keep my white non skid looking just fine. I have a piece of carpet that came with our boat that covers the swim platform. I just roll it up and store it under the rear seat when underway. It works great for keeping the swim platform free from dirt and footprints when we are at the slip.

$500.00 for cockpit carpet ? Is it made with 14 kt. gold thread ?

Well I thought $500 was a bit pricey at first, but it's inline with other manufacturers that I checked. The $500 is for all three pieces, 1) large piece that covers the hatch and under the back seat, 2) The runner piece that goes up to the door and 3) the funky shaped piece at the helm. Complete with edge bindings, hole and plastic ring for the table and the nu wave backing.

Do you have a better source?

A local carpet guy is who we used. The 268 cockpit is essentially the same dimensions as the 248. We paid $190 for the cockpit carpet with snaps and everything. It is the same carpet that Snapincarpet uses, or I should say from the same carpet mill. As long as you have the original carpet, it's easy to have it traced/copied locally and new pieces made much cheaper.

Good idea. I called a local guy. I'm going to take him a sample that I got to see if he can handle the job.

I maybe stating some think you know, but I thought I would bring it up. With carpet, if your boating in fresh water its fine, but in salt I would not use it. In time, it will start to smell.

With Seadek, ask for the scraps. They sent it to me and they have come in handy.

I've never had a problem with any smell. If there's any significant amount of wet foot traffic on the carpet I just hose it off when we clean up at the end of the day. I typically use a Hoover Steamvac on it once a season (calling it 'steam' is bogus, it just uses hot-water). Same thing with the carpets down in the cabin.

What has happened, however, is the black rubber backing on it has finally crapped out. It's all brittle and dropping dusty bits of it all over the place. It's on my "to do" list.

I'm inclined to get the striped teak-looking carpet. But I just do not have the time to fabricate the template. Do any of the carpet suppliers that have the striped carpet sell one based on a template someone else already did?

Maybe try a phone call or e-mail to the suppliers, ask the question, and then you will have your answer. That should not take too much time.

Might be misunderstanding your question, but snapincarpet.com does have the striped carpet. Go here:

http://www.snapincarpet.com/products.cfm

As far as having the template, you can email them or call. I know they didn't have template for my 248, but they might have them for yours.

If not, you can mail them your current carpet to use as a template, or they will send you a template kit.

Good luck.
