Hi, OK do they work, I was looking in gander mountain yesterday and came across this new one. No drilling which is good.

It is supposed to save fuel as you plane earlier? I have no clue as I have only been boating one season. I have noticed the bow rises high when pulling a tube till I realy get going and with passengers at the back to I have to get up to 25 mph to plane, then ease back a little. But as I say I am a novice at this. I am using the standard prop by the way

Ask 10 people about these and you will get 10 answers.

On my old Thompson, I had one. It came with the boat. I liked the way the boat performed with it and never had any issues.

My true thoughts are if the engineers at Four Winns thought the hull needed it, they would have added it from the factory or made it an option.

It boils down to your personal wants. I'd try trim tabs, but that is an easy & cheaper solution.

Stern drives were not made to take that type of load. If you want to get on to plane quicker, use trim tabs. There even level the boat out, were a hydrofoil will not.

Are you using the outdrive trim properly? Trim all the way down to get up on plane faster.

If you have a full load of passngers some may have to move forward to get up on plane. My boat is marginally powered so if I have more than 4 people aboard I have to work at getting up on plane. It isn't a problem but I always have to make sure trim is down and then punch it pretty good. There is no easing it up for me.

I had the same problem. I added a hydrofoil (I've had them on both of my boats) and it made a noticible difference. I've also changed props from a 3 bladed to a 4 bladed (and dropped 1 degree in pitch) and I have no issues getting on plane now, even when pulling tubes or boards with my boat filled to capacity.

Thanks guys for the input, I will stay away and just use the throttle, which is what I have been doing with the trim right down till we are fast enough to adjust. But when tubing I just leave the trim down, otherwise you are constantly trimming up and down.

Thanks again

I'll throw my $.02 in on this topic also since we just installed one on our boat. I'm running an Johnson 130 outboard so this may/may not have any bearing with your setup. We purchased the SE Sport 300 from Sport Marine Technologies.

I drilled for this installation because I didn't trust the look of the "slide-on" adapter (plus it was an additional $49) since it appeared to just use a type of set-screw setup to hold it in place. I've seen similar type setups come loose due to vibrations and I hated the thought of losing our purchase some where in the lake. Plus the set-screws will leave a mark anyway, so you might as well go ahead and drill (cleaner appearance).

Anyway, we showed a drastic improvement on the speed (or lack thereof) and the quickness in getting on plane. Plus the bow didn't rise near as much before planing, even with 2-3 adults in the back of the boat. We also noticed and sharp decrease in the required speed in order to stay on plane (low speed). And I can pretty much keep my trim in one spot now rather than constantly adjusting to minor lake conditions.

We've had a couple of trips since our installation and it made a BIG difference for us. I hadn't kept track of fuel usage before, so I have no support for any reduction in fuel usage now.

Again, this is used on an outboard, so it may have a greater affect with our type setup than on an I/O.

glad it worked for you. My guess is on a smaller boat the effect would be more noticeable.
