IMO, use what the mfr. specified. I agree about those brands, but still. It's like, I wish Mobil 1 would make a straight 30W synthetic. But until they do, it's the Volvo oil for me (which, as it happens, is Amzoil.)

but to many 75w90syn say on the bottle that its a suitable replacement for 80w90 which omc calls for. just alittle confused because technology has far exceeded this boat and its requirements. i just want to make it operate better and more efficiently!

If the boat is still under warrenty, use Volvo!! This way if something happens, they can't say anything.

Well... if it's OMC, it's not likely to still be under warranty :D .

I'd still use the spec product if it was me. But that's me.

I have priced it out, it is only 2 or 3 dollars more per/qt. With changing the gear oil and adding a little here & there. I barley use 3qts a year. So at most, $9 over the non-Volvo or non-Merc brand! You are using it in a $1,500 to $2000 unit. Its not worth it, to me, I would rather spend $32 in a three period, than in 3yrs. have a $500 to a $1,000 repair bill and down time on the drive. OK, maybe I am pushing it a bit, but do I want to find out for saving $9 a year, no.

I have always had Mercs, until now. So OMC, I of heard of them, but don't know anything about them. Whem I picked up my new boat (with a Volvo), I asked, I have 2qts of Merc oil, can I use it, it is the same wight. They said, Both are very close to the same oil, but it's under warrenty. If something happens, you don't want it to be said that you were using the wrong stuff.

The OMC hi vis is hard to find, unless you have a West Marine or similar around you, just get the Merc Hi Performance gear lube, it is one of the best and works great in a Cobra, I've used it since 2004, at my mechanic's recommendation.
