Hi, I presently have a 298 2003. Very Nice boat.
Next year I want to sell it for a 378 Diesel with shaft (no IPS). All 378 that I see online to sell contains 8.1l gaz engine. Any one have a 378 Diesel with sfhat to sell ? Where I can find one ?

you know, in boat world ; less mecanic, less problem.
I know the IPS but when it breaks , it cost you a lot.

With shaft everybody everwhere can fix it quickly.

and less expensive... but again, I have to find one, thats the big problem.

Eh, Volvo's pretty motivated to stay on top of IPS issues. So I wouldn't be too quick to worry about dealing with repairs.

That and you'd have to hit the bottom damned hard to cause significant damage to the IPS pods. Enough that the same sort of impact would definitely cause significant problems with a shaft setup too (like bent struts, ruined collars or even damage to the v-drive transmission). I defy you to find "everwhere" that can *properly* deal with serious impact issues with a v-drive shaft setup like the kind used on a 348 or 378. Alignment is critical and I've dealt with several shops that just could not get it right, ending up with a regional factory guy coming out from ZF.

Best, perhaps, to find local people that have OWNED an IPS setup and hear what they've had to do to deal with ACTUAL problems.

We've found we're happy enough with the 348-sized boat that we wouldn't likely be candidates for a boat large enough to have IPS drives. But if we were to upgrade I'd definitely give them serious consideration. For only 37' I'd wonder about the added expense of diesel as the payback is pretty lengthy. For anything larger it'd be a no-brainer as you can't beat diesel torque for bigger boats.

I wouldn't be so hasty about avoiding IPS. You do lose a lot of maneuverability, convenience, greater efficiency and get added noise levels. So you'd want slower, noisier, less MPG and less agile (and harder to dock) all because of the remote chance of needing work on it? Not sure I follow that logic.

Im leaving in Quebec , Canada, the thing here is because im running a lot during a season, my last 2 summer I ride 150hours (for 5months). I anticipate to ride the Intracostal in the next year, this is why I dont know if the IPS is a good thing for me. On the other side i absolutly dont want 2x 8.1litres. before purchasing a 378 with twin 8.1 I will consider a trawler instead. It all depend what kind of ride you run. At this time my 298 with 4.3 work well, but with 2youngs kids it just a little bit to small.

If you want a trawler then get one. We may move to one as our next boat. More often than not we don't need speeds faster than 20mph and several 'fast trawler' types are nice.

That and traveling the ICW is probably less annoying in something like a trawler instead of an express cruiser like the 378. You "can" do it, of course, but the more elevated and enclosed main cabin in a trawler makes for a more pleasant sightseeing ride on the ICW (as opposed to being down in the salon in the 378). There's a lot of long, slow stretches on the ICW and being up on deck inside a cabin is sometimes a lot more pleasant (for passengers).

Going with a bigger boat like a 378 and perhaps underpowering it might be less than ideal (but I don't know how the 378 with those engines performs). I did a little checking on the FW site and didn't see when they had a 378 with diesel and shafts available. I'm not betting a lot of them ever got built.

Depths vary on the ICW, some sections have better depths than others. I believe it's the southern portions in the Carolinas that have the least depth. Don't know how shallow though and whether it'd make a difference for shaft or IPS.

I'm not going to talk you out of the idea, just wonder whether avoiding IPS is necessary, or whether an express cruiser is all that great a solution for an ICW trip.

The actual problem with the trawler is my girlfriend, she dont want one.... Grrrr. My first choice is a trawler but the boss wont. I show her last summer a beatiful mainship 38. But she still doesnt like it. I will get a trawler a day, for sure.

I have a friend that have a 348, i think if im unable to find a good 378 i will check for the 348 wi twin 5.7

The benfits of diesel is maintenance as well. When its in good shape You can run it for a while, this is not the case for a gaz engine.

If you see a good 378 ,let me know

Well, who knew there was a 378 with a custom Ralph Lauren 'Blue Breeze' interior? According to the pitch, it is sure to please everyone!
