I have a 2008 Four Winns H200 with a Volvo 4.3l FI engine (225 hp). I have noticed since I bought it new that it is lacking in holeshot when I am pulling wakeboarders up. I do not have a tower. I am wanting to know how to determine the best prop for my boat that will give me the best holeshot power. My specs call for an RPM range between 4400-4800. Also, is a tower that much better for pulling wakeboarders up or is it just better for the boarders?

First off, welcome!

IMO, you have a somewhat underpowered boat for your size. However, as long as your intention is "only" boarding with just a few persons, prop selection can make you happy. If you are after hole-shot, with 7 peeps in the boat, and still have a top-end of 50 MPH, you will need more giddy-up than the 4.3 will allow.

We beat props to death in this forum, so do a search and you will likely find the answers you need.

Get your running data and plug into this Prop Slip Calc. Once you get your "slip" you can plug in different prop options and see what gives you closest to high end of the WOT range.

Thanks Walt! I was a little concerned about the power when I bought the boat but figured Four Winns engineers knew what they where building. I now wish I had the 5.3l minimum. However, with that said, the boat has fair power loaded with 7 peps and everything about it is great. With the peps growing up (16 to 21 years old) I am finding that I need more holeshot. I am not concerned about top end speed at all, 40 is fine with me. Really all we do is cruise and wakeboard. I'll check the chart you reccomend. Thanks!

Couple things....yes the tower helps the boat and boarder...it allows the boat to pull them up instead of Thu the water....also hole shot shouldn't matter much for the boarders..it should be a steady increase in speed...kinda like 0 to desired speed on around a 7 second count....that boat will more than accomplish that I assure you. ....keep in mind the HP on that engine is around what the 1990s 5.7 litres were with the 2bbl carb...not quite the same torque but HP is close.

Now pulling up someone on solo ski will demand some holeshot umffff.....I have a set of competition O'Brians in the ski locker that only get wet when I wash them down. Seems the kiddos have no interest in them..its either the boards or tube.

Thanks for the clarification TX H210SS. I hadn't considred the advances made in HP with engines in the past decade, good point! My biggest concern with a tower is the added weight to the vessel. The issue I am having is with my 21 year old son. He is approx 170 and 6' tall. When I am pulling him up wake boarding I must have the throttle at max power. Once he is up I am able to back off and pull with ease at about 20 to 25 mph with about half throttle. I am currently running a 15.5 19 RH alum prop.

First, WELCOME!

2nd, is this one of those rare occasions where a 4 or 5 blade prop may be the best?

You don't need holeshot or power to have a good wakeboard boat. The time it takes to go from zero to 20mph is of no importance as long as it's steady. We wakeboard behind my H180, 3.0, with 6 adults in it weekly. Is it underpowered? Sure, on good sharp turns or tricks from the wakeboarder it will slow the boat down and it takes constant throttle control. It's not like driving a dedicated wakeboard boat with 400hp with cruise control. That being said, the next boat I purchase won't have anything but a V8 in it, anything less is underpowered.

Practice practice practice.

Thanks Ric. Sounds like your boat is a real workhorse! I thought about a 4 blade prop but wasn't sure what that would do to my rpm's.

It gets a workout that's for sure. The boat pulls up the rider along with the forces of the board acting on the water. Slow, fast, it really doesn't matter. If you start too fast it's actually harder to get up. Wakeboarding requires almost no power, that's why you regularly see people wakeboarding behind jetski's. A buddy on the lake that's a good 225lb wakeboards behind his friend's Yamaha XL700 every weekend.

I would work on driving the boat and rider practice before you go changing props, etc. It took me a good 6 months learning how to start a wakeboarder "perfect" time and time again. What really helped was driving my friend's Malibu with a DTS/Tow system. Seeing how it's supposed to be done by a computer and just copying that in person by hand did a lot. It's a very involved process. From adjusting engine trim, how fast you apply throttle, how much "overrev" you give it past your set RPM/MPH goal before you back down on plane, then readjusting trim, watching revs, etc. How you do that 100% effects the person you are towing.

Your boat is maybe 500lb heavier then mine, and 100hp more. Trust me, you got plentyyy of power to wakeboard.
