Some people dont deserve a boat

I'm sorry if I come out like an angry man but this just turns my mood upside down.

Long story short, last year I had a guy docked beside me and he was pretty much careless. His boat was leaking oil and gas and would accumulate on the side of my boat. After I spoke to him nothig was done saying he checked it out and everything was fine. Whatever.
The I saw 2-3 black scuffs on the side of my boat but I havent made a big deal about it as it buffed right out.

Now this year I was so glad he didnt renew a the same marina and that I was getting a new neighbour.
2 weeks ago i get to the marina and I see a nice chip fairly deep in my hull. Turns out his ladder which is placed sideway on the platform has hit my boat.
Once again I dont make a big deal about it, ai was waiting to see him so we can figure it out what will be done about.

Days pass by, he didnt show up for 2 weeks and then yesterday he decides to take it out.
I get to the marina with my gf, walk up to my boat and I turned green.
Still unde the shock of what I have just seen, the phone rings. It was him saying he clipped my boat a little bit cause conditions were horrible and so on.
I ask him to come to the marina so we can figure it all out and he shows up 10mins later.

First of all he denies he hit my boat the first time then tries to find excuses for this hit. It all came to it was windy and he couldnt dock i easily, the current pushed him on my side.
He then proceeds to tell me he will ask to change spots, this way if he continues hitting stuff it will atleast be a dock...such a great attiude.

Now I have to deal with insurance tomorow and see what the estimate is
I allready called fw And the sl art graphics are sold as a whole kit. That is 900$ in graphics alone and the scufs are rough too. Its not a case of buffing this time plus that first deep nick in the hull. Sounds expensive anyway.

All this to say, some people dont deserve to own boats. Instead of waiting or asking for help lets just ram it in and hopefully everything goes well.

Sorry...but I would be freaking out as well. Don't apologize. That is the main reason when I used to slip m boat, on the side away from the dock I used to leave 6 fenders hanging to protect against idiots like this. He is responsible to pay for this...end of story. So what about the conditions, if it is raining and you are at fault in a car accident do they let you get a pass...nope.

I concur with all said above. I went so far as to hang a rope with 2 fenders woven in then. At least my neighbor will hit the rope a fenders before me...

My biggest worry is the idiot 2 slips down with an old Sea Ray who jumps in and just fies up his engine....NEVER RUNS A BLOWER! Not a matter of if, but when. I ask him to please make sure his insurance is up to date in case he takes my boat out too.

Sorry to hear about that. BUT, winds, current or act of god. He hits your/my boat. He is respnsable!! Since he knew it was windy, he should not have gone out!

People spend their Sunday's just watching idiots load their boats at the ramp, you think people that use a marina are any smarter?

People spending the money on a marina are likely to have at least been smart enough to earn it. This puts them ahead of the random nitwits at the boat ramps quite a lot of the time. Being in an expensive marina pretty much guarantees it. Until you have transients... don't get me started...

Have your insurance handle it. Have them call his insurance company. If he's not fully insured (if at all) then have your insurance handle it too. This is why you pay for it.

I agree, idiots like that don't deserve the pleasure of boating. And those of us that do shouldn't have to put up with them. Sorry to hear what happened. Consider us having heard your rant and nodding in agreement.

The sad part is, some people just do not have an adequate degree of respect for other peoples boat's and don't understand the true pride of ownership a lot of us boaters have with their boats.

Now besides seeing the resulting damage to your well maintained boat, you are further inconvenienced when it comes time to have the boat removed from the water for repair due to your lack of availability to use your boat and you'll naturally wonder if it'll come back repaired as new?

This guy just seemed to accept the risk that he might bang your boat in those conditions with his lack of docking skills. He should of made arrangements to minimize the risk to your boat.

I'd be pi$$ed.........

I guess I'll chime in with a slightly different perspective, accidents happen. Sure he is responsible for fixing your boat. But come on it's just a boat, it can be fixed. No one was hurt.

If you expect that you will never get a scratch on your boat, then maybe you don't deserve a boat. Most people have a boat as a fun past time that they use less than a car. They don't have the practice they have with a car. So they make mistakes, especially with docking. If people didn't use their boats every time they might have trouble docking, they would never use them. Plus how do you learn to dock in poor conditions until you try?

If you don't have pilings between you and your neighbor, you should hang fenders, and you should ask them to. When you have a bad day docking, you will be glad he has his fenders out. You will have a bad docking some day, it happens to everyone.

responsible people should enure they cover any damage issues when they do accedental damage because of lack of experience or just a bad day docking, it's just the right thing to do. I don't buy the "it's just a boat, whatever" theory. Most people take a lot of pride in their boats appearance, and having a neibour who does not would be very stressful, and it's not right that you to have to worry about it all the time. If it were me, I'd be moving slips away from anybody who I knew honestly didn't give a crap, you have way more tolerance then I do.

I would be angry too....not that i would think it was on purpose or anything, but the fact that damage occurred out of negligence.....I do think paying for a complete sticker set for that one small emblym is not realistic though.

I would check with a local shop that deals in making vinyl signs/stickers and just get one or two made up....can even take teh opportunity to get them customized for a few bucks....that is one of the problems with slipping at a marina that us who trailer don't have to worry about. One poster said that people at Marina's are typically better if you will because they have more money (not word for word, but meaning is same as posted).....that's total BS and a typical "yacht club" attitude that's not even close to reality.....the proof would be hmmmmmmmm this post.

I can say without hesitation that some of the biggest boating idiots i have seen have had the really big marina slipped boats....buying an expensive boat or a renting some floating styrofoam with a platform doesn't mean you acquired knowledge and damn sure doesnt imply you have acquired knowledge about boating. A marina is nothing more than a floating storage lot.....wait til people start looking through your boat and "borrowing" things they forgot.

Done both ranges, cheap ramps, better ramps, cheap marinas, more expensive ones. Voted with my wallet for better classes of idiots. Nothing's perfect, of course, or true all around. Just going by experience, of which I've had quite a lot. So if your experience differs, that's fine. But it hardly makes anyone else's "BS".

No use bickering over this. Fact is, the guy in the other boat damaged someone else's property. He should have called the owner of the boat he damaged or contacted the marina to get a hold of him so they could work out how his boat can be returned to the condition it was in before the incidents. The owner that caused the damage did not do this and is in the wrong. He should have handled it differently. Rich, poor, expert boat driver or rookie helmsman...you keep your "stuff" how you want to. If you choose to not care that your boat is all scratched up, fine. It is your money. But you have to also respect how other's keep theirs and if you are the one to damage it, then you repair it.

I have come to the conclusion that no matter how hard you try, you cannot have a perfect boat. I have tried and tried myself. If its not something you do yourself to scratch it, its something someone else does, by their own fault or inexperience, or one of the systems doesn't work (ie blower, or temp transducer, or now generator).

I definitely agree the guy didn't handle it worth a damn, but the upside if the picture is clear enough, the black marks rub out and the gouge is under the decal, so gel coat match isn't as big an issue. Have it filled and install the decal, and you are back in business.

My dock neighbor was hit twice last year, achored at the beach. 2 different boats, 2 different times, I witnessed one of them first hand or I would of had a hard time believing it could even happen. In both instances the "other party" stepped up and made it right, as I hope this guy does.
