I have a 2009, H210 with a Volvo 5.7 and I wanted to put in a transom/swim deck trim switch. FW only has one available for Mercury which they say it will not work on the Volvo. Has anyone ever done this with a Volvo and what parts did you use?

for starters you are dealing with 3 wires so in theory it should be a matter of you choosing a thru hull switch and wiring it up. as for a "factory" switch this will fall into the custom field. I have been thinking of adding one also for at the house when under cover and when i am out of the boat and it is covered along with at the beach.

There are several threads about this very subject which you can search for. I'll try to dig a couple up and will post them here if I come across them. It's on my list of items to add also....

If memory serves, the Merc. switch seems to have been favored even by those with a VP and it was plug and play into the wiring harness.

Update:
OK, here's one thread - enjoy the read....

Thanks for the posts guys. I will have to look at some of the aftermarket units. I remember when I was looking for one on my last boat, and I wanted to install it on the side of my merc o/b, my mechanic said I had to use the merc switch, I forget the reason why but despite my same reaction that it's just three wires. I think there was something different with them and the wiring, and because it has to be tied in with the existing trim switch wiring. Even when I contacted Four Winns they sell them for the merc only, and said that it will not work on the Volvo.

Mercruiser Transom Mount Trim Switch part # 87-815200A02 will work on VP without any problem... Your boat should have harness for transom switch and very easy to splice 3 wire to make this switch to work.. I installed it on our 08 H260 with VP 8.1 The installation only took me 15 minutes....

Hey Flying Sushi, Thanks so much for your information, it's a big help...especially to see the pictures, that's exactly what I want to do. I guess the reason why FW said it wouldn't work is do to the fact that it won't plug directly into the wiring harness, it's no big deal for me to splice it in. On another note, how do you get pictures to show up? I've been trying to put pictures in my signature and include them on posts, and it just isn't working.

Thanks again for your help.

Hey Flying Sushi, Thanks again for the link to the part. Bought it, installed it, and it work perfect that the existing trim wires were really close to where I installed the switch. Made it so much easier than climbing in and out of the boat to trim the drive unit when I just serviced it and stored it away for the winter.

Thanks again!

I was going to say... 2009 you have an SX-A. Volvo sells a plug and play harness/switch that requires no wire cutting.

That's weird Ric, When I called FW tech they said there wasn't one available, and I couldn't find anything online or through Volvo. Didn't even need to cut the wire, I just used the self piercing crimp connectors...worked great, plus the Merc switch looks nice and clean and work great.

Hm. I've tried googling maybe I'm wrong but I'm quite sure the SX-A drive (not the older SX-M) came from the factory setup for a transom switch and adding it was plug and play.

Ric you could be right. I'm just going off what FW told me. The local dealer did originally give me the number for the merc switch and when I questioned it working with the Volvo, I had to contact FW and it was there tech that said it wouldn't work. When I was on the FW website and you look up the part for the trim switch, it will only give you the merc part number.

I was happy with the merc switch and it does work great. If you happen to find out if there is a Volvo switch, feel free to give an update on this post as I'm sure it can help any future Volvo owner that wants to do the same thing.

I took a look at my '02 Funship with a VP SX outdrive over the weekend and mine has the round connectors back there instead of the flatter ones.

For mine, it looks like the Merc # 87-815200a-1 should do the trick:

FWIW our dealer used to install a specific one on all Four Winns boats that was basically just a black plastic switch. It was unlabeled and looked like a hack IMO. That one might have been plug and play. The merc one looks like a factory install on the outside when you get done.
