Even though this bulletin says its for the V8 models, it might apply to the 4.3 V6...
"Restricting the return line raises fuel pressure which can degrade performance"
Sounds like what you've been seeing....

Has this been checked?

Have you changed out the fuel lines? Do you run ethanol? Ethanol breaks down the rubber in the hose and weakens it allowing it to collapse in bends and such. Just a thought.

Rick

Thanks guys, appreciated. Nice to have lots of people to ask when problems like this present themselves. Great forum :-)

Lou - the regulator you linked to is one from a later 'proper' EFI engine - mine is an early type, the TBI is more like a very early type of injection, only two injectors spraying directly into the throttle body, rather than an injector per cylinder. It runs on a map from the Ecu, and can't directly adjust mixtures like the later types as it doesn't have an oxygen sensor in the exhaust...

The inlet and return lines are stainless, not rubber - so no kinks. The pressure regulator is built into the throttle body (helpful, wish it was stand alone!) and works with a spring and diaphragm, so not adjustable...
See here: https://www.marinepartseurope.com/en/volvo-penta-explodedview-7797466-25-11065.aspx

I'll have to look and see what I can do with parts etc...
I know all early tbi GM engines used this system, so maybe parts won't be too bad - fingers crossed!!

For what it's worth I wish it had a carb too :-(
Depending how long this goes on, it may well have soon, ha ha!!

Thanks Rick - I've not changed the lines, no - and yes as far as I know we're on the ethanol too :-/ will have to check this out. Maybe getting the injectors cleaned too may be a good idea....

Cheers for the input guys, it's really appreciated...

I'd take a look at a GM parts catalog for the Chevy Blazer/S10 Pick ups before they went to port fuel injection, it's probably a GM part...

Bit the bullet and ordered a new top cover, C/w Fuel pressure regulator and two new injectors along with gaskets/o-rings to sort. Fingers crossed this issue will be sorted by the weekend.... :? 8)

Yes and no!

Yes, it could be, but the GM trucks all ran at 11psi fuel pressure, whereas boats are at 28psi.
So Fuel pressure regulator spring/diagphram is slightly different on boats.

Volvo only do this bit (now) as a kit with the injectors - typical - so had to bite the bullet and get that from them.

I could have bought an aftermarket part/gm part and continued messing around, but i just need it sorting, every time the sun is out i'm getting itchy to get out there!!! I did find an adjustable unit from the US on ebay, which looked good as you can adjust fuel pressure - but it would have taken 10 days to get here.

As it happens i would have had to send the injectors off to mainland uk to get them ultrasonically cleaned, as there is no-one on my small island who can do it, so the price of the new top cover, pressure regulator and two new injectors isn't too far off from what i'd have paid for them to get cleaned and the adjustable top cover from the US - with the one difference being that the kit i've ordered will be here Weds/Thurs so hopefully by the weekend i'll have these in and be able to get out (fingers crossed).....

But you were right about the Chevy Blazer/Pickup - lots of identical parts Lou. Handy to know.......

Well, the saga continues. Volvo sent the kit.
Despite what was allegedly in it, it turned up without the Fuel Pressure Regulator Diaphragm and spring, and only one injector.
***** sake!!!

And they say the parts are no longer available too :(

I've found a place in the US that makes an adjustable regulator kit, and will suopply a new diaphragm and spring too, along with two flow matched recon. injectors so am going to order them.

The frustrating thing being that if i'd have done that in the first place, i'd have them by now - instead i have to wait another week/10 days for the parts to get here.
Bloody annoying.
