i have been talking with a friend of mine who also has a boat and the two of us are thinking about going in on some wrap and doing a shrink wrap ourselves this year. has anyone performed this on there own and have any suggestions of what to do or not to do? or what to watch out for?

i will pull my tower to make it easier. i had it done a couple years ago and it was a little over 200 for a 19'. we can get 7m wrap for around 120 to do both boats. then we'd just need to get a gun. obviously we'd be purchasing a cheaper gun and not a 600+ one. would a heat gun from harbor freight work out? something like this (might just take longer???):

or this

i've watched some videos and what not on wrapping and it doesn't look to be to difficult.

also going to winterize myself this year. makes me nervous but this is going to save me allot of money and i think it's time to learn. my buddy has been doing his for 15 years now so i feel confident in his style. i guess the basic is just put it on muffs and run the antifreeze in till you see it coming from the muffs then fog her out and add stable to the fuel?

really bummed that i'm having to start thinking about this already!!! where did the summer go.

oh i'm in denver colorado as well so there is snow load issues with the wrap. i figure a couple 2x4's for support and wrap away!

thanks for any and all advice!

I too looked into this in the past. I found indoor unheated storage for $15 a foot and I didn't have to look at the boat in my yard for the off season. I would be leary of doing this as an amateur due to the "gun" heat and the possible damage it could cause.

We're going with the portable shelter this year. I've got a buddy that used one last year and with almost 100" of snow and one really bad ice storm, he had no problems.

I'm going to have the motor professionally winterized though. I get it free this year anyway because it was part of the deal I worked out when I purchased the boat.

I figure doing it this way i should save every year. The shelter is only $300 and I was told because I have the full color band they would have had to carry the wrap below it so I didn't get a fade line which means it would have cost me even more than the average wrap. To winterize and wrap my old QX last year it cost me almost $300.

+1 on the 2x4 idea!! You need to make some sort of structure to support the snow. We use the Teepee method here on our sport boats and more of a back bone structure on our cruisers. The 7mil wrap will work just need to be more carefull with the gun so you dont blow holes in it everywhere. As for your gun....... You really need a propane flame gun. Those other guns are ok to melt shrink tubing but man you would be there for a week trying to shrink your boat. I know you are trying to save money but a propane gun will have the cover all done in less than 10 mins. Just my two cents from little old Rhode Island..
