We had a problem with one engine burning through more fuel than the other as well. The previous owner (a friend) did not have that issue. We ultimately found that when we purchased the boat, one of the props had some damage. We had the previous owner pay for the repairs as part of the sale. We had the fuel issue and didn't know what is was. We pulled the props, and sure enough, the original repair was done incorrectly. Since the new repair, it has been smooth sailing.

Wayne, Good to know for next time. I wish it was one of my props, but when i pulled the boat out of the water for the winter, it was the first thing i checked and the props were in perfect condition. Thanks for the update, all my manifolds and risers are complete now. Doing the oil coolers in the next week or two. Head is also put back on. Havent even started the electronics on the boat, this was something I didnt expect, so I have to wait till after xmas before any more money is spent. :)

Weather,
Just make sure you have the mechanic check the manifolds and risers if he hasn't already. Even though there may not be water in the engine like I had, your engine will run harder and burn more gas if you have a partially clogged riser or manifold. Mine looked perfect on the outside, but once opened up, you wouldn't believe how clogged and rotted they can get. If imwas to run the engine any longer than I did, I would probably have cracked the block. Might want to check it out. Not sure if it is your problem, but doesn't hurt to check it out.
Best of luck
Chris

I will definitely check that in the spring, thanks for the heads up. I'm surprised that by limiting water flow, the engine runs cool - shouldn't it run hot if water flow is restricted? I fully admit I don't have a good understanding of the water flow in our Volvo, but this does surprise me.
Is removing the manifold and riser to inspect it as easy as it seems? Not having it in front of me ATM I could be wrong but it just seems like some bolts, remove exhaust and out they come? Of course a new gasket would be required on re-install. I might just have to try that myself in the spring.

If you can help me understand how the blocked / clogged manifold and riser caused your engine to run cold I'd appreciate it. My engine will get to operating temp if I'm idling around, but as soon as I get to cruising speed, the port drops back to 135 or so.
Steve.

I had a thermostat problem to begin with, i believe I had this in another post that I had. It took a long time to get up to the normal temp (170ish) and then it was all over the place. If the manifolds and or risers are blocked i would guess it would make the engines run hotter, but also it is my understanding is that if they are blocked, and there is no where for the water to go, it can blow a head gasket like mine did. My engines are closed cooled, not sure if that makes a difference or not, I would assume it does since there is no raw water running through the engines, which will make my engines run at normal temp, but then again if I had a head gasket blow that would make me think it should run hotter than normal. I could be talking out of my ass here, but logically it makes sense! If anyone else wants to chime in on this subject, please do.
Regarding moving the manifolds and risers, yes, it is rather easy, bolts and it comes right off. You will need new gaskets of course, but be prepared to spend a few hours doing this job at least.
Hope that helps you a little bit, I am new to the boating world with this particular boat I have, so learning myself from this site and others.
C
