I have no electrical current at my dock either. No dock lights, no service the nearest electrical current is 60' away at the camp. This is pure Volvo Penta.

Not sure if this is of any help...(I don't share this corrosion problem on my '06) but I asked my local FW dealer this morning if I should get the "fresh water" anodes, and he agreed. He was aware of this premature corrosion problem, but indicated it is specific to 2007 volvos. I'm not sure exactly how accurate this is, but he mentioned that Volvo used to share the same setup as OMC, but went to their own in '07...and the problems started (possibly from a bad overseas provider). In viewing the boats on the lot, the 2007 VP sterndrives clearly have a different anode setup then my 2006.
As my boat is solely used in fresh water, he indicated that I should get proper anodes installed. As an inexpensive precaution, he also recommended new rotor, cap, plugs & fuel filter. Apparently these items are most succeptible to this type of "electronic corrosion".

Yeah, just that the anode arrangement/size/placement is different. As a separate matter/post, I was concerned that there was a "hole/opening" in the stabilizer fin over the prop on my boat (where many outboards would have a small skeg type device installed to counter "prop walk". I later found out that this was normal. When I went to the dealer lot to check the boats on display, I noticed that the '07's had anode placement different from my '06 VP sterndrive.
Sorry to hear about your plight. Hopefully, the dealer and/or Fourwinns step up to the plate and promptly make amends.

The '07 drives are completely different from the '06's and before, including the anodes. I hope this isn't some sort of inherent design problem with the new drives.

Here's another thought, just throwing it out for whatever it may be worth. On some '06 and prior engine/drive packages, Volvo included the Active Corrosion Prevention System (I think that's the name, ACPS). I know it was on the 5.7GXi, but not on the 5.7Gi, for example. I assume they still do the same thing with the new drives. I think you can add it to any engine/drive as an option, but I don't know how much it costs. You shouldn't need it if it wasn't included. Again, I'm just throwing that out.

I hope you are right 230 Mike, that there isn't some design flaw in this new drive.

I did think about the APS, and it is an option for this new drive, but on Volvo's website it states that it is not for freshwater use.

I will be at the dealer tomorrow morning, so I will let ya know how it goes.

Well, that's interesting, since they include it with some packages without regard for where it will be used. Maybe they've determined recently that it isn't needed except in salt?

UPDATE - The boat is at the dealership now, and the next step will be talking to Volvo about the drive. We did a quick check of the grounding strap, and all seems to be in place there.

My dealer is suspecting incorrect anodes to be the problem. From what I gather, he orders his boats with freshwater anodes, and sometimes they arrive with the saltwater ones. At any case, he is going to chase Volvo on the problem. I mentioned to him about the drive replacement or casting replacement, and he highly doubts that Volvo will do that (but he is going to ask). He figures that all they will allow him to do is repaint the drive, and replace the anodes.

I guess we will just have to see what Vovlo says....

I went to talk with the dealer on Saturday, We did a survey of 10-20 boats in the yard. Most of the 2004 2005 and 2006 drives were in better shape than mine. My dealer who is a great guy said he was surprised and he never really looked that closely at thme before and pretty much said you are correct your drive is corroding too fast. Im pushing for a new drive. My drive is defective and corroded when it shouldnt be. If a 2004 boat with 200 hours on it has a better drive with less corrosion, I did not get what I paid for. I paid full price. I should get what I paid for.

Anyone know how to post pictures?

Anyone have a contact above the front line at Volvo or Fourwinns?

Try Mike Steffani, FW Tech Support/Warrany Rep - (231) 779-2303

If I had the level of corrosion seen in the pictures, I'd be pushing hard for a new drive also. Something is absolutely not right with that.

Posting pictures: first you have to upload them to a photo hosting site. I use a free account at Photobucket.com, but there are many others. This board has a photo site, but I don't know if it's working correctly at the moment (I just discovered PM's aren't). Once your images are uploaded, you include them in your forum posts by clicking the Img button above the text box, and inserting the URL of your photo between the begin and end tags (I tried to show an example here but it tries to convert my example to a photo). It's kind of a hassle the first time you do it, but it's a lot easier once you know how.

Update -Spoke to Fourwinns and they are contacting Volvo on my behalf. I also caught wind of something and wondering if anyone knows anything about it. I heard forma dealer (not my dealer) that the hew 2007 trim pumps are on the outside of the boat mounted to the drive. There may possibley be a excessive electrical current problem because of this. I have no proof of this and it may be missinformation but thought Id pass it along.

Thanks for the info Mike.

Try Bill Kruger - he is the warranty manager - he has been helpful to me in the past...

Allright, you guys are convincing me to push harder for a drive replacement. I think i will call my dealer tomorrow morning, and see if he has talked to Volvo yet. If not, I am going to tell him that the new drive is what I am looking for, because something is just not right. Can anyone with a 2006 drive (that sits in water all season) post a couple of pics for me as a comparison?

Sure does look like the same problem on both drives.
