Is there an alternative to OEM for replacing Water Pump Pulley (recirculating pump) on a 2000 Volvo 5.7GS. From Volvo, the price is $138.61. Looking for a lower price alternative, or a higher quality alternative.

Engine has 2 V-Belts:
Crank - Circulating Pump - Alternator
Crank - Circulating Pump - Power Steering Pump

What is specifically wrong with just the pulley? Seems odd

Is that the pulley that bolts onto the front of the water pump (4 bolts)?

Image

If so, I dont see why a GM part wouldn't work. The one in the picture is going for $25.00 on a wholesale speedparts website (and its even chrome) I know several parts are "Marine" only, but a pulley is a pulley. 8)

I think what rpengr means is the circulating pump. That vintage engine, the pump pulley is integral with the pump. It is a standard automotive pump. Pull it, take it to the local auto parts place and match it up but get new. Not rebuilt. You should be out the door for around 60 bux.

Yep Winter, the circulating pump, should look like this:

The pulley bolts to the front using four bolts. Here is the official, actual, way overpriced VP pulley:

I believe the integral one you mentioned is for a one-piece serpentine belt (I think). :D

This is the pulley I am looking for...yes, with 4 bolts. Mine has some rust in the V-grooves that causes the belts to wear. I can scrape it smooth, but it will happen again. That is why I would rather have a plated pulley (or SST, or Anodized Aluminum)

The official (Overpriced) pulley for my engine is VP P/N 3852220 $138.61 from the VP store or local dealer.

Billet Aluminum for $38.00. That's a bargain, but it doesn't say it's anodized. I would have it anodized for marine use... and why not blue or red anodize just for style. But I think I'll see what the chrome plated pulley costs, then decide.

I scraped the rust out of the grooves today (VERY Carefully with the engine running), so that will buy some time and get me through my 160 mile cruise next weekend.

And I could kick myself!

2 weeks ago I changed my impeller, and did not change the somewhat worn alternator belt. On my old OMC, belt changes were a 3 minute process. Raw Water Pump was not on the front of the crank shaft.
Now I'll have to stand on my head again to remove the water pump bracket and hoses and bracket, just to change a belt... AARRRRRGGGGGG!

That's a good idea. That's what we sometime do on the airplane engines.

Thanks Niagra and Ric. That should do it.

Here's a really easy fix. Clean the pulley groove out thoroughly with emery cloth on the tip of a screw driver while she's running. Then clean out any debris with brake cleaner and allow to dry. Then spray teflon grease into the groove liberally and run engine briefly to coat the pulley thoroughly.

You'll never see any rust again if you re-apply the teflon once per season.
