I know this is somewhat a common problem. Anyone have to replace the top drive cover where the dipstick threads into on the out drive.
I found that the previous owner had installed a helicoil on mine. I will be replacing it before spring launch. It looks straight forward.
Not the cheapest hunk of metal. I have been quoted approx $350 for that top cover

yes very striaght forward. two bolts where the front cover goes through and the two rear bolts.
Just keep from any debris entering after cover comes off. i am sure you will replace the gasket as well.

If it's a SX-MHP transom shield, there are another 2 bolts that need to be removed from inside the boat. The gasket is actually an "O" ring if I remember correctly from when I dismantled mine.

I'm intrigued, if it's been helicoiled propely, the new thread is actually better/ stronger than the original one in the casting. Why do you need to change it ?

If you look at the exploded view from the link he supplied it shows the top cover and gasket. it only is held in by the two top bolts from the front plastic cover and the two on the top . nothing else. once the front plactic cover is removed you only have two bolts left.

I agree if the helicoil kit is holding the i would leave it alone

I am. Told by my marina that the dip stick is not making a proper seal...that being said i did not see any evidence to tell me that. The fluid is not milky. I just want to make it right and do not want to find out the hard way. The boat is high and dry right know and i don't want to have any issues down the road. The boat was only in the water for 1 month last season, the previous owner did not have it in the water

My mistake, sorry for any confusion caused ! For some reason I was thinking it was the cover on top of the transom shield, it clearly isn't ! I blame it on a "senior" moment.

I have plenty of those senior moments....well my wife says I do anyway

A little late on this thread, but I have a helicoil in mine too... it doesn't leak... I would not worry about it if I were you... all you are doing is putting a perfectly good cover in a landfill... the best thing you can do is just keep a couple of extra o-rings on hand and replace them if they get smashed or ripped up over time...
