Just for the record, I was one of the people that had the u-joints explode after my Volvo Penta Mechanic replaced the ala carte on the shaft that was supposed to be replaced as a whole.

It took out the upper housing of my outdrive, the transom shield and my bellows. It was NOT good.

My mechanic advised strongly against replacing the u-joints individually but I found a forum out there that gave part #'s that appeared to cross reference perfectly to my (then) 1999 Vista 258 with the VP DP-SM outdrive. Big mistake.

Tread carefully when messing with the Volvo Penta with the service bulletin on the driveshaft and u-joints. Do not try to outsmart Volvo Penta on this one. It cost me $$$$$$$$$$ and a lot of boating time.

My previous boat was a 1999 one with a 5.7GSI/DPS combo.. I bought it in 2001. I changed the U/Js pre the 2003 season and used it for 2003 and 2004 without any issues (we did about 60 engine hours in each of those seasons) . The U/Js I used were genuine VP ones, which they used to sell at that time, not aftermarket ones.

The official VP workshop manual for the 1999 "WT" drives even gives instructions on how to change them. Those joints incorporated angled zerks on the yokes and the manual gives dire warnings about how important it is to get their angles right , to prevent contact of moving the parts occuring.

We haven't heard from the OP of this thread for 5 days. Hopefully we will get an update on the insurance saga.

The original U/Js on a 1999 DP-SM had zerks. The replacement OEM Volvo U/Js for that drive had zerks. I don't expect the absence of zerks was the problem,. I really don't know what an acceptable +/- tolerance is for the outside diameter of the U/J bearing casing to the bore of the yokes is. Pretty tight I would expect.

Sorry everyone, its been a crazy month. I just got more bad news.

So the Foremost Insurance adjuster called in another more experienced outside adjuster to look at it. And THey agree that the Ujoint failed due to rust and wear. and it wouldnt take much for it to break. THere was more damage. including to the transom plate? bellows and more. But the bottom seams fine and the prop is perfectly fine. They said they would not pay period. We called another insurance company that stated the policy is clear and usually standard wording. They did a rough guestimate for me and said it would be around 3500 bucks to fix. Now the problem is that the shop (Eagle Marine) cant find the parts required for the XDP. Awesome! So they have given up. and Insurance is being sleazy. The Shop is saying I should just replace the synthetic XDP (16k) for a new metal one that would cost around 12k!

Im stuck. I know this can be fixed. My new service guy at Eagle Marine is just giving up. Any ideas?

Ideas???

Maybe a used DPS drive might fit ?

Or even a new XDP costs no where near 16K , it's less than 8K here.

I assume that this is their reson for denying the claim. If nothing is damaged in the drive line before it reaches the u-joints, they aren't seeing any cause or evidence of strike to cause such a failure. If your props are stainless it can be pretty tough to mess them up on a sand bar....you have to hit HARD for that.

Either way that is a very frustrating situation and an extremely expensive one at that. I would think there would be a lot of used XDP parts on the market, but if there isn't then it would be a good time to switch to a new metal one. Sorry to hear about the outcome and wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted :(

Any leads on a metal one? What would work on my 2005 5.7 Volvo? And from a parts requirement and financial standpoint...what would a metal drive replacement look like? Ive always hated the XDP anyway considering its just being used in a fresh water lake.

Check the Internet. Saw a rebuilt DP-SM for $4995.00 plus $190 shipping eBay. Just a thought.
