Good taste but a run of bad luck. But Im determined!

My problem is that while I am a very technical person. I dont know a whole bunch about boats. So when we say we can put a metal outdrive on. I assume its a direct replacement for the synthetic 1.95 XDP I have now? Same gearing, same performance, just metal and more serviceable? If so, what exact model # should I be looking for? And I am ok with a quality refurbished product. If the price point is much less then why not metal?

Or is it even worth trying to have another shop rebuild the current one? Keeping in mind that it is not just the U joint issue. we have a torn transom plate and other parts that will need to be sourced and rebuilt. The boat it self is fine the transom area is perfect. Its just the outdrive parts. Considering the current shop gave up on the rebuild I can only imagine they were just trying to turn an easier buck by just having me buy a complete new outdrive. Or there really is a lack of parts out there for this rebuild.

The XDP drives were know to be troublesome; some of the issues are leaky bellows (probably the cause of the rusted ujoints) and cracks in the transom mount. The problem is that you can't just bolt an aluminum Volvo drive on the XPD transom mount. You need to swap it all, drive, transom inner and outer mount, and exhaust system. It's all different. Id look for a used Volvo SX drive and transom assembly. It should fit the cut out you have and would be cheaper than the latest conventional Volvo drives. Still a huge job, you have to pull the engine and everything. You could also just convert it to a Merc drive, same work maybe cheaper.

You know.........with the recent Storm "Sandy".......I would think there would be a huge number of donor boats out there that can be bought for next to nothing........it might be cheaper to find a damaged boat with the drive that you need than to buy a drive by itself???

Good point for both! I will look in to both options. Volvo SX and donor boats.

We had the same problem. Hit a sandbar and couldn't get the insurance to pay a dime. Cost us a ton of money. Even though the mechanic tried really hard to help us get the insurance to pay he said one mistake we made was trimming up too far and putting in gear to try to get off the sand. That will break the U joint.
