Hi Guys, my boat will start maybe 50 percent of the time. When I turn the key I get nothing/engine wont turn, then other times she will start right up? When it dosen't start I hear a click and a noise for 3 seconds or so, but engine wont turn.....batteries are brand new, lights, radio, etc work with no problems so i know its not the battery, cleaned the terminals just to double check. The boat has been running good for a while so I am not sure what the problem is now......any help would be great....

Thanks
Chris

After you finish with your profile, go out and check your battery cables. I had this problem and found that the neg. cable wasn't making a good connection to the engine block so the ground had a mind of it's own, sometimes would and sometimes wouldn't.
I doubled up on the cables and added extra pos. and neg. cables with automotive terminals along with the ones that attach to the threaded posts.

Most likely: Bad battery cable connection somewhere (battery, block, dual battery switch)
Next most likely: Solenoid

Though unlikely, if this problem started when you replaced your battery, don't rule out the possibility of a defective one. It happens more than people realize.

Who knows how a battery was handled before you buy it!

Year and model of boat and engine type?

Battery cables can corrode internally making them do a poor job of handling the considerable cranking amps needed by the starter.

Did you remove, clean and re-tighten the cables at just the battery posts? Or did you do it at the starter too? Both ends are just as likely to get loose and/or corrode. So both need the same service. And remember that electrical circuits have both a positive AND a negative connection. Don't forget to check the whole circuit.

What "noise" for 3 seconds? From where? The starter on the engine or from somewhere else? Open the hatch and listen while someone else is helping turn the key. While staying clear of the belts, of course.

But then it's just as possible it's the starter itself starting to go. The one on my Jeep was marginal for a couple of months. Eventually just smoked. I'd get clicks, slooooow cranks and the one day it just went poof.

I have a 1998 238 vista four winns, how do I take the throttle out of gear when starting? It seems like it only has forward, netrual and reverse, I have a Penta 5.0 GL which is carbed, how do I pump the gas before starting?????

His current problem sounds like a bad ground at battery or starter ground cable. But we may never know the answer, based on previous posts with no follow up.

Hi Guys, thanks for the feedback, the starter with the built on solonied seems to be the problem, not turning the flywheel when the key is turned....
They tested the starter/solonied and no power.....

Thanks
Chris

That is exactly why I posted the new member tips afw200. Bill shouldn't have to go searching other posts (like you did) for this guys boat info. When you go to Autozone, you tell the parts guy your vehicle info, he doesn't go out and look in the parking lot for your car. Sorry, but its just a pet peeve of mine, especially when its so easy to throw your boat info in the signature line.
