Ric.... For the kind of money you want to spend ...... I'd look for a 7.3 diesel excursion..... It will pull what ever you want and get 16mpg to boot....... And you and 7 passengers will travel in comfort....

I've had the F150s and F250s in both gas and diesel..same for Ram in the Hemi and Cummins..also the Tundra. If you go diesel get the older Ram 5.9, ford 7.3 or new ford...honestly that's overkill and diesels are no longer cost efficient. The government doesn't want them around anymore.
The Tundra has at least as much stopping power as the F250....the limited slip traction control of the Tundra is pretty effective...it utilizes the alternating brakesif you go into a spin. Titan may too but I don't know that for sure. You can carry a bag of kitty litter or pea gravel in case you hit some occasional slime.

Not knocking the titan but can attest to the tundra...my bro is a master Toyota tech and has been for 25 years...its one hellof a truck. The new Ram 1500 is impressive and tows mine with ease....it does squat with the rear independent coil suspension and mine will get airbags to deal with it...was an option I passed on in error.

Honestly I get 4wd because I drive places most will never go...I don't have to worry at the ramps....but if I didn't have it I would out think the slime and still launch...even if I had to carry a long handle bristle brush.

Well I'm not getting anything until my car sells. Might be a while.

05 Dodge Ram here with over 240k miles on it...never had any problems launching or pulling out either of my boats and I could load the bed heavy in my lowered pickup and still maintain the correct stance... and since I can't afford another car I also take it drag racing to a few tracks as well...

Get a 4x4. It only takes a second on a slippery ramp to end up like this guy. I see it at least once every summer.

I know those who live in the South or South West may sometimes doubt the need for 4x4, but here in the North East in winter without it if you have hills you ain't a goin' nowhere when it snows, limited slip or not. Our local ramp is sandy and slimey and both my Jeeps have no trouble at all on it. Last week I was down there watching two nice but clueless kids try to pull out their non-running outboard powered boat. The boat kept stalling, the pintle hitch came apart and the winch cable broke. The whole mess was being held on by 1 safety chain. They tried to pull out with their Jeep Cherokee, rear wheels spun and I came over to help..."hey guys try putting that Jeep in 4x4..." lever was full forward in 2wd, lol. Told them if they get that thing out to park it in the beach lot and come back with a hitch that's in one piece and a proper winch strap.

I am one of the rare ones then..Of all the years I've towed, over 250k miles on my Safari and over 240k miles on my Ram.... never once have I ever said.. "I wish I had a 4x4 or wish that I had bought a 4x4", I use my van/truck as my daily driver and get mid 20's mpg's with them. Count me lucky as to every boat ramp I've ever gone to, I've never slipped. And the weight savings helps me when i drag race it and has forced me to learn about suspensions and modify mine so weight transfer work for me at the track as well as towing...

You aren't alone. The only tow truck I've owned is my 4x2 F-150, which has also been my daily driver for going on 16 years. I appreciated the lower purchase price, lower insurance, lower maintenance costs, better mileage, and (at the time anyway) better ride of 2WD.

Having said that, I expect to replace it in the next few weeks and will probably go 4WD this time. There have only been a couple of times, BUT there were those times, when 4WD would have been very comforting on steep, sandy ramps.
