It is possible that the hose that goes from the outdrive to the transom mount got kinked, or the rubber o ring that fits in the transom mount for the water passage between the drive and the pivot housing let air get in (if its above the water line on that boat) and that caused the impeller to lose prime. I'd go back and check the hose clamps on ALL the hoses of the raw water system to make sure none are loose and sucking air. A 5/32nds box end wrench will fit the hex on the screw clamp and you can get them tighter than you can with a screwdriver.

I've always heard that you shouldn't start a VP with the drive in the full up position because of the extreme angle the drive shaft is in. I think my original (1996) manual says not to...have to look that one up.

That's what I think too.

There's a plastic nipple in the outdrive where the water hose connects to the lower leg pickup. Mine cracked letting air in. Very sporadic issue drove me nuts. Only found it by hooking a water hose up backwards on the pump intake trying to troubleshoot and saw it leaking around the fitting.

Thanks for the info, iam going to pull the boat this week and look at it -- can you see that hose or nipple with the drive on?

The hose yes you can see it on the left side of the transom mount with the drive tilted all the way up. The nipple you can't see unless the drive is off. And to replace it if needed you have to remove the pivot housing (the piece the drive bolts onto).

I was able to inspect and replace mine without taking the drive off. Had to make a tool.

You might be able to replace the nipple without taking the drive off on a SXA, but on a SX there's no way to replace the nipple without taking the drive off; the nut holding it on is totally enclosed inside a cavity in the outdrive. Even taking off the water gallery inspection plate, there are horizontal ribs preventing access to the nut. Less effort to remove the drive than to make up any special tool to gain access to remove the nut !

The pivot housing does not have to be removed to replace the hose nipple; just the outdrive. That gives full access to the nut holding it in place.

Isn't the failure of this hose nipple an SXA issue, rather than on the earlier SX transoms ?

I think you're right about that Graham, I have never heard of those nipples failing on either the OMC Cobras or the Volvo SX models...probably same part for both.
I've never had to replace one but looking at it, it seems difficult to do unless you at least remove the bolts holding the pivot housing on and let it come back a bit to access that area (hose clamp up and under the pivot). If you were doing the nipple you might as well change that hose and make sure those lousy screw clamps are tight (5/32nds box end or socket works much better than a screwdriver).

Yeah it's more of a SXA issue but it happens to all of them. Sold the boat before I had a chance to have an aluminum one mocked up. SXA has a lot of issues, i hope I never own one again.
