That sucks! It's too bad they didn't sell you Viton rings in the first place, but good on you for knowing you need them.

Buna-N (Black) o-rings are 100% fuel safe (gasoline to straight alcohol).

Ric, Im not sure what specification the o-rings were but the guy at Worst Marine brought me over to their plumbing section (next to the toilets and fresh water pumps) and picked a pack off a peg. The package says little to nothing about their intended use and limitations.

Hes a new guy there (I live a few blocks away and am a frequent flyer) and when I asked "are you sure these are safe for use with fuel and oil? They are going onto a high pressure fuel pump" He reassured me that they would be. I just didnt trust him with something that has no margin for error...

FWIW, the brown Volvo Penta o-rings that are the actual part were $2. I'd rather be safe, than sorry (visuals of fuel spraying all over the place while Im underway and unsuspecting come to mind)

Buna-N o-rings will probably not cause a problem with fuel, but they are not intended for it. The price difference for Viton is slight.

The VP pumps are garbage. Next time have a GOOD mechanic install an aftermarket fuel pump and never worry about it again.

Ok, I was at the boat today changing my joker valve. I took the time to check my factory VP pumps. They have "Carter" stamped right in the housing. I also checked the spare. To my surprise, I found another. So, all 4 of my garbage FW pumps are in fact, aftermarket Carter pumps.

Well, ever since I removed the high pressure fuel pump for inspection and changed the o-rings last week, the boat has started up perfectly every single time since! 8) I dont know if the o-rings were bad, if I dislodged some junk, if I unstuck the float in the fuel vapor separator... but whatever I did its starting up and running great now?? (Not complaining!)

I bought that spare high pressure pump (airtex on amazon for $71) and am keeping it on board for a spare.

Glad you figured it out and I hope she keeps running great. Congrats! BTW +1  on a fuel line gushing fuel all over the engine compartment that would not be good at all.
