What is the best way to locate the cause of my tachometer not working? I don't know if the problem is actually the instrument itself, the wiring, or something else.

Is it completely dead or acting funky? Check the wires coming off of the coil. Could be loose or corroded.

Pretty dead. The needle is just above zero and does not move when the boat is started up.

That sounds like bad gauge, not bad wiring (because not on zero, and no movement).

My tachometer developed a fault, the needle would move very slowly to the correct position or swing madly. I remembered reading about a solution that fixes a faulty gauge 90% of the time. On the back of the gauge there is small fitting that can be turned to 4, 6, or 8 cylinders. Put a small flat screwdriver on it, push it in and move up and down through the settings then leave it in its original position. Work a little lubricant through the same area. Mine has worked for months since I tried it. Apparently this mechanical part and the electrical connections are a weak spot for corrosion.

These are quite helpful in relation to a Mercruiser/Faria gauge setup - might be some information that will help with your VP?
