The other thing you can do (a bit 'o work but well worth it) is to put a longer tongue on the trailer; that way you can get the stern in the water with less winching. A trailer with a long tongue also backup better. I think most trailers have tongues that are too short.

I agree with that Lou. They used to make extensions just for use at the ramp but I don't know if anyone still does or if they'd be practical to use these days with crowded ramps, etc.

A place called ex-tend-a hitch makes a retractable one. I was able to get a factory OE style 9' tongue for my galvanized Load Rite. Works great on our short ramp. It even had all the holes in exactly the right places making the install relatively cuss word free ;)

I appreciate your asking!

I had it X-rayed on Monday, fortunately there was no bone damage done. The bruising is "impressive" to use the doctor's words. One side of my arm is various shades of purple, from my first knuckles almost up to my elbow. There's still a bit of swelling but it's subsiding, slowly. Doc said it could be 2-3 weeks before it's really back to normal.

After reading french829's post, I realized even more just how fortunate I was, especially considering that I was 3+ hours from home and alone. And to think how close some people get their heads to the winch when cranking it!

Oh - and I'm not sure I mentioned the $300 gel coat repair this cost me too...

Mike--Glad to hear you are on the mend and it wasn't worse. Bummer it hit the gelcoat. When my accident happened, I clearly remember (like it happened in slow motion) standing there in intense pain--but only thinking in my mind, "don't hit fiberglass, don't hit fiberglass". Somehow--it completely missed hitting the boat--but made up for it with the damage it did to me.

Perfect! I never think of those until it's too late.
