So I joined in with about 100 boats that drove up and down the Las Vegas strip last night in protest of them shutting down our lake.
All four Vegas news stations covered it.

I came across this 2 days after we got back from Lake Mohave.....

LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA News Release

For Immediate Release: Oct. 1, 2013
Release No.: 2013-70
Contact: Christie Vanover, (702) 293-8691
GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN FORCES CLOSURE OF LAKE MEAD NATIONAL RECREATION AREA

BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Because of the shutdown of the federal government caused by the lapse in appropriations, the National Park Service has closed all 401 national parks, including Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

Lake Mead National Recreation Area is located within Southern Nevada and Northern Arizona and includes Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, a portion of the Colorado River and 1.3 million acres of land.

Visitor facilities, such as the visitor center, campgrounds, marinas, trails and launch ramps are closed. Park roads, including Northshore Road and Lakeshore Drive, are closed, and access to the park is restricted, until the government reopens.

Overnight park visitors will be given until 3 p.m. Oct. 3 to make alternate accommodations and leave the park.

Those with personal property within the park, such as boats, trailers or cabins, will be allowed access into the park to either remove their vessels or trailers or to remove belongings from their property. Boats may not be removed from slips for recreation purposes within the park, and overnight stays are prohibited after Oct. 2.

C.A.S.T. for Kids and all other park programs have been canceled. The Slam the Dam Open Water Swim, scheduled for Oct. 5, has been canceled at this time. The American Bass Association Fishing Tournament, scheduled to begin Oct. 4, will be canceled if the shutdown continues. Services offered via commercial use authorizations, are also to cease operations within the park.

As the fifth most visited unit of the National Park Service, Lake Mead National Recreation Area hosts 14,500 visitors on average each day in October; nationally, more than 715,000 visitors a day frequent the National Park System. Gateway communities outside Lake Mead National Recreation Area see about $500,000 per day in total sales from visitor spending that is lost during a government shutdown.

At Lake Mead National Recreation Area, 170 employees are on furlough because of the shutdown and dozens of concessions employees are similarly affected. About 60 National Park Service employees remain on duty to ensure essential health, safety and security functions at the park and its facilities.

Because it will not be maintained, the National Park Service and Lake Mead NRA websites will be down for the duration of the shutdown. For updates on the shutdown, please visit www.doi.gov/shutdown.

Oh, that. I understand they've closed Mars too.

So they have someone there who apparently can let you in to drive your boat out of its slip, but if you drive it anywhere except to the ramp, that's prohibited.

Sounds like something a government would do that deserves to be shut down.

Here is my album of photos from the event. Wish I would have had a photographer with me.

Awesome pics and thanks for fighting the good fight!! I love the pic with Mandalay Bay in the background. It's so irritating we can't use the National resources we pay for because Washington can't get their heads out of their a$$! I double checked my pay stub this morning and it appears they are still collecting the same amount of taxes for fewer services....sounds like a rip off to me :(

That's so crazy....and I heard all fed employees are set to get back pay when this mess is over...now what is point of closing a lake or a website. I'm glad all water in Texas is property of the State. That's one advantage to being a Country before a State

Just posted on another thread about this closure. Lake Meade National Park closed. I have a friend who has a house boat permanently slipped on Lake Mohave and they only have access for an hour to retrieve personal belongings from their boat until they reopen. I called the Lake Mohave Resort and was told that after the closure it is illegal to be on the water, swim in the water, fish, and they are arresting any people that are. Crazy they can close it due to lack of funding but can still police it.

I think everyone out there ought to show up at once and launch. They can't arrest everybody. F'n assholes need to get the message that all of this belongs to "us," not "them."

But if it's a National Park, doesn't it belong to the nation, to all American citizens ? How can they deny you access to something you own , just because the political parties are having a pi**ing contest/ stand off ? I could understand if they said use these parks at your own risk, as there's no wardens/ lifeguards on duty etc, but to deny access seems wrong, if not downright ilegal ( based on UK law, maybe it's different in the US)..

You know the biggest problem is that the people who are being told to keep us out, are really just following orders. I feel sorry for the wonderful park rangers who are there because they love it but have been ordered not to let anyone enjoy it because of this shutdown.

...what would be awesome would be if the law required Harry Reid himself had to stand at the ramp and tell me no...

There is talk on another forum about taking a caravan out to the ramp...but really only going to cause trouble with the poor NPS rangers.

Can't even voice my opinion to him...website is turned off..

"Due to the government shutdown, we are unable to respond directly to your comments and opinions at this time."

237 years ago, we invited the Brits to go back home. Now, it takes a Brit to understand the depths of insanity to which we've sunk.

Thank you Graham!

This doesn't seem to be something that Theodore Roosevelt had in mind when he expanded the National Park and Monument program. Makes one wonder why we are having to still pay full tax rates. We really need to clean out DC next go round. So did they close the Grand Canyon too?
