Awesome project and exactly what is on my list for nice upgrades to freshen the boat up this spring. I'd love to see close ups of the LED's you used and the mounting you did. Sorry, you're not allowed to have "trade secrets" on this board!! ;)

Btw, you seem to be a solid stereo guy. Would you be able to offer advice on the correct settings of my amps? I don't think I have it dialed in right. I have 2 4-channel clarion amps running 4 cockpit speakers and 1 sub. If I posted pics of the control panels would you be able to suggest the proper set up? The manual is NO help. I realize that it may require fine tuning but I blew one of my cockpit speakers and I feel I have too much distorted base going to the one speaker.

Its supposed to get up to 75 this weekend so if I get the boat I will shoot some pics of the LED mounting I did. As far as dialing in your system, I think that would be virtually impossible without being there listening to it, knowing the impodenece and ohm load of the speakers, and knowing the same for the amps. And especially knowing how your speakers are wired..bridged, parallel, in series. If your amps are overloading your speakers or if they are wired improperly, nothing will make them sound right or stop them from blowing. My suggestion would be either look around online and learn everything you can about wiring amps, speakers, ohms, etc. Than tackle it yourself and make sure it is wired right...or just take it to a car audio shop. Sorry man, wish I could've been more help

Thanks. I kind of figured you'd need to have to hear it. I'm going to have to do some serious reading. I started with the stock, yet upgraded, clarion system FW uses. Essentially, one 4 channel amp, one sub, and four cockpit speakers. I decided to add a second identical amp to power the sub separately and have the possibility of adding another pair of speakers. I think my "thinking" is correct on that. Not sure why I cooked a speaker. I ran all new wire so maybe I messed up the polarity? Here's a link to what I did.

I was using the stock clarion component speakers. I'm going to switch over the the Polk Momo MMC6500. Any thoughts? Sorry to hijack your thread! I've read that the cross over boxes for the tweeters aren't marine grade like the speakers (dumb) so I'll need to access where they are going to be installed to make sure I want to use them.

I know most people have been happy with the Polks... i thought long and hard about the Polk speakers...

What got me on the MOMO set was the cost is still pretty high -- 2 sets of 6.5's will run you 270 a set at retail (crutchfield)... online deals get that down to around 200 or so i would guess.

I purchased 2 sets of JL Audio 7.7 coaxials for 270 a set... yes, these are a bit bigger at 7.7 inch speakers... but they are a worthy contender for listening to! They also have a smaller 6.5 inch version which I would guess is 40-50 bucks cheaper if you want to stay the same size.

Check out the JL's... deals on them are out there! My wife wanted the JLs not because they sounded better, but because they were white... and the match the subwoofer I am adding. The polk's are silver. I chose the JLs because I think they sound better than the polks (for my choice of music).

Check 'em out at a shop before you go the Polk route!

I should add though that the Polk's - both MOMO and db series were awesome speakers!

given that the price for a pair for me was within 100 or so bucks... I went with the larger 7.7 inch speaker... white in color for my wife... and the comfort that JL designed these for marine use only - not a crossover for cars...

My second choice was actually the db series over the MOMO's... I would also say catch a listen for those!

I listened to both the polk momo and db and ended up going with the db series 6.5's 10 total. The MOMO speakers in the 6.5" were hardly any different than the db's...at least not enough to justify the cost difference plus having to mount the crossover in a water tight area. The 6x9 Polk Momo's do sound awesome though! I almost went with 4 of those on the tower instead of the 6.5's but decided against it last minute. Cant remember why. I never listened to the JL's but I have worked with JL components in car audio. JL is great quality, I'm sure their marine stuff is just as good.

I just spoke with a local car audio shop and they suggested I go with the JL 7.7's. They are about $100 more a pair than the Momo's which I've found on ebay for $160. I'm told the larger 7.7 will give substantially more volume than the 6.5. Now, I need to figure out if they'll fit and whether I want to cut bigger holes. But I do like the fact that they are white as well. I think the polks may stand out too much.

If I go that route I may swap out my two clarion amps for one 6 channel JL. Any thoughts on this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-JL-AUDIO-A6450- ... dZViewItem

Hey Cincy!

I just ordered my JL 7.7's (the coax CCX's), an m6450 6 channel amp, and the JL 10inch sub... My grand total for everything was 1120 shipped to my door... I should see it on my doorstep in the next week or so.

Not sure the deal you are putting together with your local shop... but this was one of the best deals I could find... (no tax since out of state). The shop I used is an authorized dealer - so there isn't any of this internet reseller voiding the warranty stuff. If your local guy can come close to that - you are getting a great deal

PM me for contact info for who i worked with or any breakdowns on pricing for the items...

Cougar- be sure to post lots of pics including the installation process. You'll be doing exactly what I want to do on essentially the same boat except that I planned to go with the component 7.7. The one thing that scares me is cutting the larger holes for the speakers. I noticed that the rear speakers seem to have sometype of added reinforcement on the inside of the panel. Looks like that will need to be cut out depending on how much bigger of a hole is needed. I don't have a pic of that handy.

So, Paradise, you are using polks in the original locations, and it works really well? I realise you added the amp, but I was thinking I'd need to add at least one sub to achieve the sound characteristics I want. Do the 6.5's work properly without subs? I was thinking of putting in Polks and an amp, and have been trying to figure out where a sub would fit.

Any ideas?

I may just be running 6.5's, but keep in mind that I'm running 10 of them. Each with a separate tweeter at that. They put out enough highs and mid-bass to leave the system as is, but I want more and will definetly be adding a 2nd amp and probably 2 12's. the location of the 12's is the problem im fighting with now...do I build a box, multiple boxes, do I cut the fiberglass and mount an open air sub, etc. Theres so many different ways you can go about doing it, its hard to pick. For me since I have the 220 with the side storage one each side in the rear, I will probably have two bandpass style boxes built to fit one on each side, have them rhino-lined, and elevated a bit incase there is ever any water that might get in there. But that will probably come later this summer. As far as your 200, I wouldnt even know where to start. I would suggest taking the boat to many different stereo shops and get everyones ideas one the best style/location sub for your boat.
