Yeah, a T-Stat for a Ford 5.0 in a 'stang only costs $2-3 bucks, but a Ford 5.0 in my boat, $26. Prob cause it is a "specialty" part made for lower temps. Oh, and of course it says MARINE on it, so immediately the price is quadrupled, lol...

you got that right

Some people use these things raw water cooled in salt water . The car stat will last about 2 months before it rusted up solid...
The engines should ALL be closed cooled then you wouldn't have chronic stat issues...

I suppose I'm the exception as my boat has never been in salt water.

My 5.0 is a an EFI engine, so if they spec out a 140* that's what I'm putting in. I don't get it either, but the system is balanced for 140*... so 140* it is.

Thanks for the opinions.

im 5.0 efi fresh only...

IO should be closed system if in salt.. i have a buddy that runs his IO in salt and he replaces things constantly.. inboards designed for salt asr designed diff than these IO and thus they can run in salt.. my opinion do as the manufacture designed the motor for..

My merc runs a 140 degree stat too. I picked a new one up on Amazon this spring: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000N9RCJ0/ref ... 00_TE_item

I'm of the opinion that all inboards should be closed cooled even in freshwater. Cast iron still rusts then it just rusts more and faster here in the salt pond. GM and Ford designed these engines to have antifreeze with corrosion inhibitors in them, not raw water with whatever level of salt/minerals/etc in them. Its because of how cast iron rusts, it flakes off in sheets that that clogs cooling passages causes thermostats to stick open etc. Outboards are made of aluminum partly because when alu corrodes it creates a protective layer but does not slough off like cast iron.

New thermostat in and back to normal at 170ish.
We thought we heard a weird noise when we were out and the temp dropped
but never made the connection with the temp. Looked like our spring had sprung on the old thermostat.
