2000 H180 w/5.0 GI Volvo will not start, turn over, etc.

One thing that grinds my gears is when a newbie posts a question like the one I have here and gets a lot of good advice. But in the end, they never come back and say what fixed their boat. It is frustrating to people in the future that might learn from their issue. I noticed this quite a few times while searching old posts for similar no start issues.

My Previous SeaRay had the ignition key fail. The return spring did not return the key back from the start position, so while we were skiing the starter was engaged and stuffed the starter motor. Got us back to shore ok, but had to replace ignition switch and starter motor. ( approx 500 hours on boat at the time)

Key & switch $20, DIY replacement, Starter motor AU$250, Labour $200. So for a $20 ignition switch it cost a day on the water (Priceless) and nearly AU$500.......

At least it got you back to shore. Hopefully mine will only cost the $16.49 plus the day on the water.

Luckily, my tow was covered...would have been $300 :roll:

If the ignition switch fixes it, I will for sure order a spare to keep on the boat.

Installed the new ignition switch but that did not fix the issue. My father in law and I checked and double checked wiring and fuses under the helm, at the battery and the engine. Then for the hell of it, I thought to remove the safety kill switch. Unscrewed the four screws and what do I see? One of the two wires to the kill switch was disconnected. After plugging it back in, everything fires right up.

A victory dance and some high fives later, I move on to installing a 12v plug and a new prop :mrgreen:

Glad you found the cause and it was simple. Now you know why I advise using a 12 V test light or volt meter. If you checked if you had 12v at the ig terminal you would know right away if it was the switch.
Turn on the ig switch, see if you have 12v between the ig terminal and ground.

It was on my "to do list" prior to the incident. But I have one on there now, also a spare ignition switch (the old one)
