I just ordered a new 2008 FW 220 Horizon with the 5.7L Gi/Sx 300 hp engine. Now I know that that will be plenty of power for the boat, but I am curious about the other 5.7L engine option. I see that the upgraded engine option is a 5.7L GXi/Sx 320 hp. Can anybody comment on the difference between the two engines? Does an additional 20hp make any difference once you get to that point in horse power, and could one even notice a difference? I don't think that I would have paid the additional $2500 for the upgraded engine anyway, but I am just curious as to what everyone's opinions are on this. I assume that both are fuel injected aren't they?

Yes they are. The differences are that the GXi has roller rockers, different programming, and probably a slightly different cam. I wouldn't expect to see any real performance difference between the two, assuming the drive and everything else is the same. IMO the only reason to go with the 320 over the 300 is resale value. You'd see more performance difference if you were comparing the DP drive to the SX.

From reading my posts, you know I'm a Merc man. However, I have test driven two otherwise identical boats (210SS's). One had the Merc 6.2L (377 ci), the other the Merc 350 Mag (350 ci=5.7L). That's 320 hp vs 300 hp. The difference there was miniscule. I have details on this experience in another post I am unable to locate, however, I do not feel it justifies the added $2000 for the larger merc. I don't know the price diff for the Volvo...... Ehw, I said Volvo. I need to clean out my mouth with soap now.

I hope that helps.

Talking of beer..........Being Welsh, but living in England ( the shame, they can still legally shoot us with a bow and arrow after nightfall in Chester according to a law dating back to ca. 1200 AD !) I was surprised to find a Welsh * microbrewery* beer in the supermarket today; pretty nice ,

Any recommendation for a good beer when I next visit Florida? There used to be a "microbrewery" outlet in Orlando aiport, now replaced by an Australian steak house outlet. Good , no, excellent steaks but progress ?

Big Blue - I don't have any experience driving boats with the two engines in the same size boat, but the mechanic who took us on our test drive advised that the differnce in performance is small enough that you really wouldn't notice it. I have a friend that has the 5.7 gxi in a Crownline 225 BR. I know my boat will obviously weigh less than his, but I'm looking forward to a little friendly real world testing this summer.

Impulse, you'll have a higher top speed. Weight is the biggest determining factor in these sizes of boats. Hole shot and time-to-plane may be closer between the two of you, but once on plane you'll likely outrun him.
