The bracket that is holding the out drive to the stern and is mounted against the hull is leaking from the bottom. When running on muffs, I noticed water spraying downward between the gel coat body and bracket. The water was warm so I have to assume it is engine water. Can it be tightened or is there a break in a seal?

Are you sure it's a leak ? The exhaust hose from the transom to the tilt housing will have holes on it's underside for pressure relief in the event of a blockage/ to allow water to drain out so it cannot freeze in the drive. Certainly on the VP drives, which I suspect yours may be similar to( from the time of their joint venture), it's normal for a lot of water to come out of that hose when the engine is using water supplied by muffs.

So is the water coming out in that area normal?

I'd have thought so; Ive only had VP drives though, I'm not sure about the OMC drive; what sort of OMC drive is it ? LouC can probably best answer your question.

The drive is an OMC 1995 model. Its an early version of the penta drive. No leaks in the engine compartment. Just concerned about taking on water. Had it slipped for the first time since I bought it. No leaks after two weeks inside the boat.

Yes that is the joint venture drive, with the hump on top, not flat across the top like the OMC Cobra. However the transom design is very similar. When mine is running on the water hose, most of the exhaust water comes out from under the transom mount. There are idle relief ports in the transom mount itself and water also comes out of the slits in the bottom of the exhaust bellows. Water should not becoming out where the transom mount meets the transom itself but as you can see in this pic that area may get wet when you are running it on the hose. You can also see how bad my old gelcoat looked before I got the boat painted lol. And the ugly old bottom paint which here is a necessity. So run it on the hose and post a pic...

Alex, I had the same year and model boat as yours, and yes that is normal. Water will come out from the bottom of the transom shield where the anode is mounted while you are running on the muffs. I'm not sure if you have exhaust system flapper valves installed yet or not, but if you ever have one come loose it might partially block the exhaust flow at the transom and out through the prop. I had it happen on mine. In that case this exhaust opening is all you have. You'll most likely notice a significant loss of power but it will run smoothly. The dealer's shop spent a lot of time on that one and couldn't find it.

Alex, you were wondering about a leaking gasket for the transom shield. On this boat and Volvo out drive you may first notice a little water in the bilge from a leak under the back of the engine. If you have a leak A little water will be coming from the bottom of the transom cutout for the out drive and collecting in the bilge. If your boat is leaking here, the best fix is to replace the gasket. This most likely involves pulling the out drive, engine, and transom shield. A temporary short term method might be a bead of 3M 5200 around the transom shield on the outside of the transom. Have fun with your boat, we sure did with ours! :D

I had the boat in the water and all is water tight inside the engine compartment. Thanks for all the advice.
