I'm pretty sure that I'm not quite that high in hp. I have the dyno print out that says it is but I'm skeptical. although it was built with a 600cfm 4 barrel and the previous owner switched it to a two barrel, I'm sure that doesn't help. that is my next big move, Edelbrock performer intake with a 4.

even still I have a hard time thinking this hull could ever do 60 mph. just doesn't seem like it wants to. I had a 21 pitch 3 blade and it was still in the 50mph range with the same rpm..

Really thinking that the 2 barrel is choking it out.

The QST5 pulls like crazy though.. great watersports prop. but sucks the gas....wow full tank in one day. ouch.

might have to try a 4 blade stainless. would like more speed and gas economy, the river stretch I run is about 15 miles long. Boat landing on the southern end, the good restaurants and sand bars on the north end. so at min. I'm running 30 miles just up and back.

The H180 isn't built for speed, but with 250ish hp it should be doing at least 60. It's all about the right prop though.
Read this article Stingray did on testing props on a 4.3. You'll see why I picked a Vensura for my vessel and how amazing it is compared to anything else I've ever owned. It's nearly identical out of the hole compared to a Quicksilver 5, but with the fastest top end tested. Literally zero trade offs.

so you saying a 21p vensura huh. maybe I'll see if the prop shop here will let me try it out if they have one. would love to tickle upper 50s even.

What size 2 barrel do you have? Holley 2300, 500cfm?
If so, you're not likely going to get much of a performance difference going to a 4 barrel, unless you want to push 5000RPM +.
I have the same hull but with the 5.7L, a 500cfm 2 barrel carb and a Solas HR Titan4 prop. I assume <250hp.
I top out at 53MPH, around 4600RPM and the hull is starting to walk.
We have too much of a deadrise to make this a fast & efficient hull.

Smart tabs solve the walk issue. Put them on a very weak setting, just enough to keep things straight.

Difficult to effectively fit them on this generation hull:

I'll have to look up the Holley # to be certain how many CFM it is. I'm pretty sure it isn't getting enough fuel though. I'll have to get a better video of it tomorrow, but when you pin the throttle at start she hesitates a bit. which If I'm correct it is sucking too much air to fuel. I would love to push 5000 + rpm as the numbers and build sheet put it at 5100 or so. really think there is more in this motor than I'm getting currently. maybe I just need a carb rebuild also?. I don't know.
I was hoping I could put my holley 650 4 barrel from my '65 on there and just test it, but read that auto carbs shouldn't be used in boats. anyone know if that is true? Or maybe get a bigger 2 barrel?

I agree with the too much deadrise though. at upper 40's she walks all over the place. not sure what mid 50's would do. I'm a little lighter in the backside than you are also with the v-6.

We just had a boat blow up in my marina last week. Go-fast boat with tons of automotive go-fast parts (carbs, ignition, etc). Yeah, use the marine stuff. They have o-ringed shafts and such to prevent leaks.

ok so a quick search and the largest 2 barrel I can get in marine version is the 500cfm. hmmm going to take a closer look at mine tonight and see just how big it is. Pretty sure it is a 500 though.

500 cfm on a 4.3 is big. When I upgrade my 5.0 carb and intake I'm going with a 450cfm!

A backfire upon pinning the throttle indicates a lean mixture.
Hesitation or bogging usually indicates too rich of a mixture.
Look on the carb's throat (remove the flame arrestor) for the part number.
Was your carb's jetting modified at all, post engine rebuild?
p.s. While your flame arrestor is off, look to see what number is stamped on your accelerator pump nozzle.

It backfires when the rpm are high once in a while. This is what I found. Forgot to check the nozzle size.

I didn't tinker with it at all not sure what the other guy did. Only had like 12 hrs on the rebuild when I bought it.

Know you have me wondering if the set it rich to help break in. Either way if it is a 350 cfm isn't that a bit small?
