I have had the boat for one year without any problems. I knew it was coming since this is not my first boat. I was on the lake Saturday. The boat ran fine in the morning then overheated in the afternoon. It was really hot and smoking. There was no alarm that went off. The boat started to slow down like it had weeds on the prop then I noticed the smoke. I thought it was on fire but it was just steam. I dumped water on the engine to cool it then pulled it out of the water. The boat did start the next morning on the trailer. I will test it on the garden hose today when I get home. What should I replace since it overheated? I know to do an oil change and I will check the compression on the cylinders but what else?

I would inspect / replace the impeller first. Then check if the galley faucet has been replaced

Do not pour cool water on a hot engine. You can crack the block that way. Let it cool by itself. Also, its not good to get the electronics wet. Could be wet cap and rotor?

Impeller
You will need to remove the exhaust risers to check the flappers (if it has them they will be vaporized) and the rubber exhaust hoses can be burned on the inside. If you had flappers and they melted and are missing, you really should remove the drive and get the pieces out of the exhaust outlet in the bottom of the Y pipe.
Its also possible for the water tube gaskets to get melted in a bad overheat. That requires splitting the upper and lower drive and replacing them. They don't always get trashed, but if it still overheats after replacing the impeller, it certainly is a possibility.

What engine/drive combination do you have?

The only way you should speed up cooling off the engine is with a fan. It works wonders if you have the capabilities to do so.

ditto on removing the outdrive and checking the exhaust flaps. My port side header overheated the 1st time out last season:

Besides checking the w/p impeller, remove the thermostat housing and check for blockage. It's likely heavily corroded inside. Mine had a piece of former impeller clogging one of the nipples.

Automatically replace the t-stat after an excessive overheat event.

Thank you for all of the help. I will be working on it tonight. Any idea why the temp alarm did not go off? I am thinking of adding a aftermarket alarm so this does not happen again without alerting me.

I don't think FW's had a temp alarm in 95. My 96 doesn't. Course it coulda been an option.....Really only a few things that can cause an overheat; intake at drive clogged up, impeller failure, t-stat failure, and hose failure/disconnect.

The best alarm is consistent maintenance, pre-boat check of components, and constant monitoring of systems while underway. I have an annual plan for changing replacing parts, I always do a pre-check before leaving the driveway, and I always let the engine reach operating temp before leaving the dock. While out, I check gauges about every minute or so, and occasionally raise the hatch to check things while out and about. The only time I didn't check the engine was this past weekend (people were sitting on the engine cover cushion). You can read about what happened over in the Boating Banter section.

I am having trouble locating the water pump to replace the impeller. I have watched 4 videos and none of them had the correct location. It looks like it may be near the bottom of the front of the motor.

If you have the Cobra, your impeller is on the back of the outdrive. The best location ever invented.

Just remove the top/back plastic cover with 3 screws. The raw water pump is right underneath. Three more screws to take it apart. When you reinstall these screws, coat with form-a-gasket or similar to prevent corrosion.

I would not worry about the compression check unless you are having trouble. These engines can withstand quite an overheat. Since the system is not pressurized, the overheat occurs at 212F, not 240F like a car with pressure radiator. The main thing is checking the rubber parts as outlined by LouC above.

The impeller location depends on what model you have, the all OMC models have a flat top dog clutch shifting and the impeller under a cover at the end of the upper gear housing. The joint venture models (hump on top) have it on the engine.
86-93-pure OMC
94-98-Joint venture with Volvo

Keep in mind a 95 boat could have a 94 or 93 drive...

The water pump was near the bottom of the motor. Once I figured it our it took me 15 minute to change it.

Boat has been running well for a while now without overheating. The impeller had no blades left when I replaced it. It sounds like the exhaust is louder now since the overheat. Soon, I will be pulling the exhaust pipes and replacing the rubber connectors and look to see if the boat has or had flappers.

You really want to make sure that the rubber exhaust hoses are not damaged and leaking. It could let deadly carbon monoxide into the boat....even though its an open boat not a cruiser, its still dangerous.

I've said this many times before but get a Radio Shack IR temp gun to leave on the boat. When its running at proper temps take readings so you know what's normal. On mine when the temp gauge says 160 the intake manifold under the t-stat housing reads about 150. At idle the exhaust manifolds are at 90-115 or so and after coming off plane, 135 or so. If I see temps higher than that I start looking for problems. Keep in mind that the exhaust can overheat and it may not show on the temp gauge.
